From what I understand, no expense reserved for first responders and whatever they feel that they need in regards to equipment or buildings.

Austin stone, granite countertops, and stainless appliances help extinguish fires quicker!

From what I understand, the design concerning the use of stone and architectural features comes from a Council decision that all City built facilities will comply with the Non-Residential Architectural Standards that private developers must meet. They didn't want to be accused of "Do as I say, not as I do."

I'm not at all opposed to the niceties inside. With the risk to their lives and the hours they put in, I feel our firemen are very deserving.

Its the outer design and materials I am not terribly happy with. I feel we could have saved some money there, but I guess there is no point in belaboring the issue.

The architectural company being used, BRW Architects (http://www.brwarch.com/index), appears to have a College Station office. So, in effect supporting a local business. And if you look at their gallery of projects, they appear to be very good at what they do, particularly the municipal buildings and fire stations.

What you need to factor in are maintenance cost as well as construction cost. A dollar saved in construction that cost an extra 25 cents a year in maintenance is a false savings. I'll check typical cost/sf for stone against brick when I get to the office Monday. Unless you wanted them to just put metal siding on it.
