Ya that firehouse is gonna be massive! Seriously though...why so big?
I assume that when they designed that place, it was supposed to match the bright, shiny new convention center.
Still trying to figure out what the big lean-to structure is up top - maybe some sort of giant fold-up garage door? My guess is the fire/conference station will be covered in solar panels and windmills by the time the ribbon is cut.

Why does tax payer money need to spend on an opulent, grand-standing building like a fire station? A metal building with bay doors and an apartment area for living would suffice and probably cost a quarter (if not less) of the price. It's sort of like schools that look like palaces. It's a waste of money.
It's better than schools that look like prisons.
Or prisons that look like schools, amiright?
I had pretty much the same thought as Cinch. I'll admit its a lovely building, but aside from the cost to build, my bet is that it won't be long before the design starts looking dated. Mark my words... We'll have to foot the bill for a facelift or two down the road.

Also, I can guarantee if it was just a simple metal building with bay doors people would be on here beeching "but it's UGLY and I don't want to LOOK at it!"

Cinch you are so right! Just another thing the CS Sity Council does to justify their extravagant spending. The next expenditure will probably be to buy new fire trucks to put in the new building.

Not siding either way, but it was voted on by the citizens back in '08 (think that's the correct year).
To their credit, the current council has scaled back plans on a City Hall and Convention Center because of complaints just like these. This thing was already in the works.
Just remember that it will probably serve more calls to Bryan than College Station so it at least needs to look pretty when the trucks are out of the city.
Heard a statistic that with all the building coming between Texas and Wellborn on University, there will be something like 16,000 new beds between hotels and student housing in the next few years, so maybe having a big station makes sense in that location.

Does anyone know if they will be closing one of the fire houses after this one opens? Not a political statement, just genuinely not in-the-know.

Nothing is being closed. This is a sixth station.

If this was part of a bond package voted on in '08, then my guess is that the firestation was probably redesigned. In May '08, construction prices were at an all time high, now construction prices are much, much lower. The bond money can't be spent on anything other than what was voted on.
