food companies that produce frozen pizzas, the salt industry and potato growers lobbied congress to stop legislation that would have made school menus more healthy

Parents, where is your voice?

I have no problem with school lunches. School lunches don't make kids fat. Bad parenting does. Eating a school lunch occasionally isn't going to harm my kid. We send his lunch most days anyway so we control what goes in them. I don't need the school to make nutritional choices for me.

Okay, the pizza is not the veggie, supposedly the tomato sauce on the pizza is the veggie. There is not enough sauce on a slice of pizza to equal a serving of vegetable. What are they going to do - put one less baby carrot on the tray? This is too similar to the "catsup is a vegetable serving" that happened back in the what, 70's? Only if you eat a half cup of it. So, no. Keep putting the salad on the kids trays, although most schools do not - they just make it "available" - which means it is not "cool" to take it, or some kids think they have to pay extra. I just wish they would put all the food on the tray, not just the entree and starch, leaving the kids to pick up their milk, their silverware, their fruit and their veggies. Especially too much for a little kid to do, for sure.

Eat lunch at your kids school - it is an eye opener.

It was a good move. Congress stepped in and reigned in the FDA.

Well played sir! You and other rational people understand that THEY are responsible for their children, not the government.

This isn't a big deal, if you don't like it pack your kid's lunch.

Agreed - school lunches aren't the best choices for the kids, at least, not mine. I noticed my daughter lost a little weight during the summer but quickly gained it back the first month of school. Not good. So started sending her with a lunch from home, only to discover that she had been swapping her lunch with another girl at school! ugh! After threatening, err talking with my daughter, the problem has been resolved.

samanthaiam - I'm guessing that your daughter was more physically active over the summer, too

Now if I could just get them to classify donuts as fruit and beer as a grain then I'd be set.

BTW, my kids eat school lunch about half the time, are physically active, and are in pretty darn good physical shape and condition. They even eat the pizza and fries.

Kids do not think they have to pay extra for salad unless stupid parents complaining about a meal the mya or may not pay for say something.

And pizza as a veggie isn't new.

My son considers pizza a veggie, too, and I don't really mind, because as a parent, I keep track of the foods he eats. If he ate it every day, that would be a problem. But since he's in the 20th percentile for his age for weight, I'm not worried. You can't expect the schools to parent your children - you always have to keep an eye and if you're not happy with their offerings, make your kids' lunches yourself. No biggie.

This!!! My dad retired as a school principal, and battled some parents on a regular basis about school lunches. Compared to what many parents will elt their kids take, a school lunch would be the better alternative.

Like all of us, schools are on a budget. I tip my hat to the nutrition programs. They do their best with the resources they have, and for some kids, the meals at school are the best part of their nutritional intake each day.

"meals at school are the best part of their nutritional intake each day"...for some, it may be their only.

I worked in an indigent care facility/clinic for many years and was quite taken back to learn that some children only eat at school and through the summer meal plans that the school provide the children. I can't understand that, considering Food Stamps and other programs (different topic), but I am thankful for what the schools do to provide meals to those children (whose parents, on the other hand and imo, are to blame and not the children); but thankful nonetheless.

Let Mediocrity and Indifference rule the day and for the love of God keep those socialist vegetables away from our kids !

It is rather disturbing how much food is NOT eaten. So much food is wasted & tossed.

My voice is from me to my children. My voice doesn't come from a politician.
