Is there any CS firefighter or city official out there monitoring this website, that can answer why we are building a fire station on the city limits?
Why is the city talking about budget cuts still.....possible layoffs, but the fire department is going to build a new station? There is a lot of questions here. Citizens look out, we voted for this before we did our own research, and this isn't a slant on the fire department they do a great job, and were actually at my neigbors house the other night and were very friendly and courteous, but why so many people and a fire station so close to Bryan?

Isn't Fire Station #6 the one they're building on University near Golden Corral? I'd think that a fire station is needed near all the restaurants on University or somewhere close - where's the next closest one?

would it be the station on Holleman?

There has long been a need to have service close to the hub of so many businesses and residences.

Station #6, on University Drive will serve a lot of area.

Of all the things to complain about . . . let's complain about a new fire station. Wow.

To answer your question, a fire station is necessary and will be a valued asset for the communitiy. The station will service a major CS business sector, yet be close enough to assist the COB if a situation were to ever arise. Of course if you were “in the loop” you would probably already know all this.

Also isn't that area (near Tarrow) one of the highest accident areas in town?? I think it would be good to have a FD closer then

I've only seen this question asked one other time.

It was many years ago.

Turns out the person beeching was the owner of the land that was NOT purchased for the new fire station.

...just sayin'

OP chooses this week of all times to beech about a new fire station... Lord knows... we don't have fires around here...

I'm intrigued as to why the OP thinks a station close to Bryan is a bad thing. Would he prefer Bryan units cover that part of CS?

Get ready, OP. Because of the partial annexation of Wellborn nad the building of a new elementary school, CSFD will now have to cover further south and west of the tracks. Look for #7 to be on Royder Ridge. Just sayin'.

Say you're one of the several hundred (might even be higher than that?) people staying in a hotel on University Drive on a game weekend. It catches on fire on a floor beneath you. You're trapped in your room. Do you want to wait around 6 minutes travel time for the truck and ambulance to get there from Holleman Drive, or a minute from two blocks away?

Now those folks don't live here or pay property taxes, so say you live off Tarrow and pay taxes to the COCS and your loved one's heart stops beating, wouldn't those taxes be worth it?

Not trying to be overly dramatic, but 5 extra minutes is a loooong time to be trapped in a fire without someone wearing fire retardent clothing and an air pack breaking down a door and saving you, or waiting on an ambulance with life-saving personnel and equipment.

Not against building the station (all for it even though it means a property tax increase), but under your senerio that would mean firefighters would be at that station 100% of the time. I don't think so.

83RHG: But wasn’t that a consideration when the city closed the old fire station on Texas (next to City Hall) and move it out to the airport a number of years ago. Surely all those imaginary people in the hotels and in need of ambulance service were considered when that move was made. Or do the good folks in city hall tell us what they wish in order to justify their desires at the time. Now it’s another story.

Sunshine 1 you hit the nail on the head. My friend is a College Station Firefighter, she told me that the station on Holleman is falling down....AGAIN, and they are building station 6 at a location where is leaves station 1 with a very small district, basically putting it out of service, in exchange for the massive station 6 on the border with Bryan and which most calls will happen in Bryan for this station yet the tax payer of CS foot the bill for the people and equipment.
Next issue why did they ever leave Texas Ave to begin with? They left to go to Holleman then back during the remodel, then back to holleman. Should have just stayed at Texas AVe all along, but its not to late there is a clear lot behind the old station today. Build there and right station 1 off....build a smaller station and then build station 7 down south as well.

Just an FYI - the cities have a mutual aid agreement with each other. When a fire/ems call comes in the closest available unit responds, regardless of the city. That is why many times at Northgate you will see a CSFD fire truck and a BFD ambulance or why on wrecks on Highway 6 around University you might see CSFD or BFD depending on which stations have units available and in the station. The computer prompts the dispatcher to send the closest unit to the incident.

Just an FYI the two cities don't have mutual aid agreements, they have automatic aid agreements. There is a difference

The difference between "mutual aid" and "automatic aid" is miniscule, "automatic aid" is better in a merged city environment, and it is more reason to build a station on the most heavily traveled thoroughfare in the city. Response times are way too high for the University Drive area, not to mention Copperfield and Veteran's Park.

Station 1's district will get expanded to the south when Station 6 opens. It won't go out of business. Also, define "falling down"...

Moving Station 4 from the old City Hall to the airport resulted in income to the city for picking up the ARFF duties at Easterwood. That's what fiscal responsibility looks like ... and the CoCS taxpayers go, "Hey, what? That doesn't make sense!" I realize you're not used to it, but the "chicken little" approach of screaming about every single change to the city doesn't really help anything.

Really??????? I think I explained how it works even if I didn't call it the right thing.

Edit: Wow, I just called someone a name on here - first time in thousands of posts.

Edit: Because I'm better than that - especially for a rookie with 3 posts.

College Station snobs prefer College Station fire trucks. And ambulances. And hospitals. The Med has been advertising this for years. "Take me to the Med!" ... as opposed to St. Joe's.

I kid! But still ...

Loop, Station 1 is currently by far the busiest of them all. #6 won't put them out of business by a long shot.

Sounds to me that n-da-loop is more n-da-loop than they are letting on. n-da-loop has more information about station 6 and the history of the fire department than the general public. n-da-loop might have a special interest as to where it is being built because n-da-loop registered specifically on this forum on 6/21 at 08:41 and then immediately posted at 08:47. n-da-loop seems to care only about where it is being built, since n-da-loop quickly turned that route. So n-da-loop, how n-da-loop are you?

I liked the comment "my firefighter friend, she". Talk about throwing the women under the bus, they can't have "that" many on staff.

What's taking so long in getting it built? We voted for it back in 08. My concern is how are they going to controll the traffic issues on that busy throughafare.

Conctruction was going to start last year. nancy berry explained it to me that they were delaying starting construction to make a balanced budget last year.

When I told Nancy that wouldnt balanced the budget that we just deflected payment to next year, and next year would be the same deficit and we would be in the hole again, I got a blank stare and no answer.

I don't have a problem with the station being built in that section of town, but I do have an issue with that exact location. It's prime real estate, and though CS already owned the land (old water tower), they could of sold it and bought something back on Lincoln, using the profits to cover part of the station cost.

That said, they did make a good long term choice moving it from the TX ave location, as that whole block will hopefully be sold at some point to fund a new city hall. (I promise I am not trying to change the subject and am NOT talking about a taj-ma-city-hall).

Anyway, it's water under the bridge - with the decisions made by both voters and previous councils.

BCS-Ag, I imagine the Munsonites and other College Hills residents would have been A-OK with the city putting a fire station on Lincoln near that location.

Sounds to me that n-da-loop's objective was to negatively implicate one of the female firefighter to me. Because if "she" was your "friend", n-da-loop wouldn't have just thrown her under the bus. Of course what "she said" may have never happened. Knowing that there are not many female firefighter's leads me to believe the posts by n-da-loop are nothing but personal attacks for a personal reason.
