Well dangit, my granny [full blooded Czech] could whip up on all your suggestions and show them how its done... If she were still alive.

I really miss her cheese kolaches. I have yet to find any as good as hers. Somehow, she made her own cheese from fresh cows milk and lordy it was good! I'd never heard of a sausage kolache until I moved to College Station. I think she called those something else, but I can't remember the name. It was a Czech word... I remember that much.

Czech Stop FTW!

I grew up in West before there was a Czech Stop and lived there for many years after Czech Stop opened and they don't have the best kolache's.

These would be better options:

Try going into West at the Smokehouse or Olde Village Bakery for the best.

Of course, none are as good as grandma used to make from scratch.

runnyboy- I've tried kolaches from the old bakery, not the smokehouse though and wasn't impressed. Having lived in Hillsboro I've had enough kolaches from both to figure out which I like the best. I never understood why most of the locals went elsewhere, other than less traffic.

Runnrboy have you tried the lady in Calvert? Can't thunk of the place.. Zimyckal or something like that. I'm full blooded Czech from the West area and moved here in '08. Had my wife (1/2 German) learn to make em off my mothers recipe. Best advice is to learn to do it on your own using others recipe. My parents and brother live in West so I picked up a recipe book there and tried some of those but went back to moms

Well turaggie, I guess it's just a difference in opinion and taste. I haven't had kolache's from Olde Village in many years, so maybe their quality has fallen off. The kolache's at the Smokehouse are a bit more old fashioned than Czech Stop... at least to me. Czech Stop turns out kolache's like an assembly line and they just don't taste as good to me. But again, that's just my opinion.

I've always wanted to stop and try the kolache's in Calvert when I head up to the parent's house in West, but have just never stopped. I'll have to do that next time I go through there.
