The Snook Bakery is my all-time favorite, but in CS I always get kolaches from Kolache Rolfs.

Kolache Rolfs in a pinch, but the GOOD stuff is in Caldwell or West.

OK, I think we need a clarification here. Are you talking about a "traditional kolache" or are you talking about the sausage in a bun type of kolache?

Both really, the traditional fruit, but also the pig in a blanket type. Looking for a place that does more than the cocktail weiner. Looks like a lot of good recommendations out west. Any in Bryan/College station - Navasota way?

Short of having a Czech family member make them for you [which is what I do!], your best bet is Kolache Capital Bake Shop in Caldwell. They are located at 203 East Hwy 21. Give them a call at (979) 567-7584 for more info.

More good kolache west because there are more Czechs in Burleson County Anyway, Snook is only about 12 miles from campus; Navasota is about 24...
I vote for Slovaceks in Snook and Capital in Caldwell. The sausage kolache at Slovaceks are made with (you guessed it!) Slovacek Sausage and not cocktail wienies. They also have all the usual fruit and cheese types, sometimes pecan and poppyseed.

AggieJason, I thought we were only talking about kolaches in the area. However if we're going to go as far as West:

Czech Stop FTW!

Thumbs down for Czech Stop and Calvert.

Green's Sausage House in Zabcickville blows both of them out of the water. Kolache Kitchen in Temple is great too.

If a kolache shop calls sausage or bacon in a bun anything other than klobasnikies, they aren't really a kolache shop.

It's on the left as you are driving to Temple on Hwy 53.

Daylight donuts of Bryan have awesome sausage and ham kolaches. They use a whole sausage link and their bread is delicious!

Locally - Kolache Rolf's has a great bacon/cheese. The bread is excellent. The bacon is shredded and it's awesome. Just discovered that one last week and the only reason I got that one because they were all out of sausage.

If we are going out as far as West...I think Weikel's in La Grange!!!! Just about and hour and a half from here, but you will absolutely not be sorry!!!

Weikel's in La Grange FTW!!

YES!

FTR, all, we're talking about West, Texas, not the cardinal direction.

IMHO the ones in West pale in comparison to the ones in Caldwell, and its not even close

The ones at the Czech Stop only pale in comparison to Caldwell. Try going into West at the Smokehouse or Olde Village Bakery for the best.

(I consider myself a kolache snob...and mine are the best!)

New store in the strip center on Hwy 36N in Caldwell has been highly recommended for their kolaches...but not yet personally tested. On the to-do list.

Here's the deal:

Early Saturday morning, let's all go off in different directions and each pick up a dozen kolaches from the shop we think is best, then meet back up in B/CS at 10 a.m. to have a taste contest. That way, you guys can know once and for all that Zamykal is the best.

Green's is good stuff.... sausage is also the best I have ever had. If I am within 50 miles of that place I will drop by and stock up on their sausage and kolaches.

For pigs in blankets/sausage thingies, the local Donald's Donuts are pretty darn good. For a cheap but good breakfast (breakfast tacos, etc.), they're the best!

From Dr Loftin's email yesterday:
And, finally, the next time you enjoy a kolache prepared by University Dining, you can think of Ms. Klechka, who not only was our first female baker many decades ago, but introduced the Czech pastry to campus. She lives in Caldwell and will celebrate her one hundredth birthday in a few days.

Also, the Kolache Festival will be this fall in Caldwell. I volunteer to judge any category of kolache!

Happy Birthday, Ms Klechka!

Finally got a chance to hit Calvert and sample Zamykals...best koloches I've had yet. A tad smaller than some others, but they were outstanding.

Czech Stop at West, Tx. End of story.
