Help! I need a gluten-free birthday cake. Does anyone know of a gluten-free bakery? Thanks!

If you are wanting there are now gluten free cake mixes at several stores in town. I know that the Kroger on Longmire has them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sweet Memories offers that option. I don't know for sure that they do, but it would probably be worth a call to check.

Village Foods has a great selection of very reasonably priced GF mixes which are very easy to make. Also very good!

I think on a previous thread Villager said their bakery would even bake and decorate a GF cake (from mix). Call them.

Is this for a kid or an adult?

So whats the deal about needing gluten free? Is it for diabetics or something?

Mostly for Celiac disease...wheat allergy, basically I think.

So what do wheat allergies cause? Sickness? Hay fever? Skin rashes? Hives? Or what?
Just wondering...

birthday is for adult and kids- (mom, son and daughter) all 3 GF folks due to Celiac. In addition to wheat, oat and barley. The son is also allergic to peanuts. Celiac reactions can be EXPLOSIVE and other GI issues. The daughter got a GF salad that turned out to be contaminated and had hives for 3 weeks. I want the visit to be fun, so I will definitely check out the Kroger. Someone told me the Kroger on SW Parkway has GF tags throughout the store. Evidently, there is a growing population. Thanks for your tips!

I bought two gluten free mixes at Village Foods and their bakery made and decorated a sheet cake for me. The cake was great and no one else even thought about it being gluten free. Technically they cannot make and sell you a gluten free cake because they do not have a gluten free kitchen, i.e., they use flour in their kitchen. A gluten free kitchen was not a requirement in our case and it was a great solution for our needs. I had already tried several people in the area who make cakes but all said no when I asked about making a gluten free cake.

Thanks for the props, people.

I would say you need a cake from a bakery that NEVER has any gluten-containing items in if if you have severe Celiac Disease. Fortunately, there is such a bakery opening in town.

Starting Monday, we will catty a whole line of items from Taylor Made Gluten Free Bakery. We can also special order cakes from them for you. (They are opening as a wholesaler, not retailer, with the intent to serve us and local restaurants.) My wife and daughter taste tested many of their items as they have been perfecting recipes over the last several months.

Call Annette in our bakery on Monday and she can help you: 979-846-9600.

If you need it sooner, Duncan Hines and Namaste make excellent mixes for cakes you can easily make yourself. They are on aisle 8.

Did I mention that NOBODY has a larger selection of Gluten Free items than Village Foods? I'm not just talking locally. I have not seen a larger selection anywhere on the world. (The the dismay of my kids, grocery store tours are a part of any trip we take anywhere.)

Regarding the question on what happens with wheat/gluten allergies. In my case, I finally, after years of feeling sick found out I'm allergic to gluten. When I eat it- I feel bloated, nausea, and "foggy". Others have much more severe allergic reactions to it.
