He's run out of "good 'ol country boy" stories for his Sunday "opinion" column... if he moves to a new paper, he can just start reprinting all the ones he wrote for the Eagle.

Hey, folks, Baggett has done a great job here. And it's not by any stretch a lateral move--Waco Trib has about double the circulation as the Eagle and he will be publisher. Plus, he will be working for new, local owners instead of a chain. (Guess he will learn if that is a blessing.)

IMO, one of the best things he has done at the Eagle is assemble good people without being able to pay them very much. He is leaving a great sports staff, truly outstanding photographers and super leadership in the newsroom. I don't always agree with the Eagle but...

I wish him the best.

The Waco Trib was bought by new and local owners several months ago, and they promised to begin having their paper actually reflect their community and readership.

Very impressed with Baggett. You can tell from his resume that he continually keeps moving up.
Waco has a much larger circulation and he will gain yet more exposure.
Congrats to him but sorry to see him go.

Although never a really great paper, the Waco Tribune Herald doesn't get read much at our house anymore. I just check online for the obits to see if I'm still alive.

The new owner is a huge cubbie homer, so even if you try to read the sports section online, it's 90% baylor info - even with a separate secion for baylor sports. Totally useless to try to keep up with anything else. At one time, I had thought it would be one of the papers I paid for online if it came to that. Not anymore.

I tried to read DB when he started here but quickly realized his mission was to fill large amounts of the page with fluff and stuff.

His predecessor put him to shame.

Looks like you did not bother to read the articles the OP included. From The Eagle itself it lists their circulation as 21,000 to 33,000 for the Waco paper. I'd say that's a move in the right direction for the guy. Roughly a 60% jump in circulation.

The Eagle has lost a true liberial.
