I DIY'd it. Took me a couple of weekends. Light sanding with 220 grit on an orbital sander. You don't need to take all the stain off unless you want to go dramatically lighter or something... I just stained them the same shade. I hit them with water-based polyurethane (polycrylic) and sprayed the doors with spray finish polyurethane. Things came out looking amazing. You definitely want satin finish.
If you are stripping paint off ... um, I'd get entirely new cabinets, frankly. :-P
Speck layed it out pretty well, it isn't a hard DIY project. It is however very time consuming. If you would like us to we would be happy to refinish your cabinets for you!
I'd love to DIY it, but it's too time consuming. I restained my oak bathroom cabinets and they turned out great. I went pretty dark on them like a coffee bean.
The kitchen cabinets are dried out and need some help. They looked bad when we moved in 10 year ago, and well, you could imagine what they look like now.
I used Minwax stain, Jacob Bean color, with polyurethane in the stain. It took several coats to get the deep color I wanted, and took several days for the tackiness to dry. I got a quart, and only about an inch of it is gone, even after 5-6 coats.
