That is Taqueria Mexico at Hwy 21 and Texas.

The place across from the Co-op is Pollo El Mexicano.

Just left Garpez on Welborn.

Chips - B+
Salsa - C (seems like its out of a can)
Enchiladas (beef & chicken for me- shrimp for the wife) - B+ good fresh tortilla - meat about average ( I did have a bite of the shrimp and it was good)
Rice - C (nothing special)
RF Beans - C-
Queso - C- (at best) just melted cheese with NOTHING ELSE.
Margaritas - D- - Absolutely NO flavor - nothing from the tequila nor the mix (the wife noticed the same thing). We had to get the meltdown (a shot of tequila on top) to even know we were drinking something with a kick. The bartender said they were changing the mix and it would be better tomorrow - hmmm..

Loud music when we first entered. They sat it right between the speakers. She turned it down when I mentioned about us moving to another table.

I'm not really impressed so far Cmac. Let's hope they get the Margaritas prob fixed.. bc they are SOL if that remains subpar.

There is also a bus that sells phenomenal elotes in front of La Perla(which isn't bad either). If you haven't had elotes, treat yourself! It is fresh corn cut off of the cob, cream, lime, queso fresca, hot sauce and mayo stirred around in a cup. AWESOME!! They also sell it in front of La Michoacana grocery. BEWARE THE HOT SAUCE!!

Clucky, I respectfully disagree. I've been to many places with great salsa and bad food(and visa versa), so I try to seperate the 2 experiences. IMO, even most chain places have a pretty good formula for salsa.

Pollo el Mexicano is very good, they have the best pollo al carbon in town and good tacos!

CMac:

You have to go try Carniceria La Perla (meat market) on William J on any sat or sun morning, the best menudo, tripas, chicarron and barbacoa in town hands down. You can eat there but space very limited or you can order to go. I can't remember that place on MLK but I know which one you are talking about. We need a good taqueria in college station that can severe a good taco with cilantro and fine dice onions and red or green sauce.

There is this place my brother took me too but I was super drunk and they had tacos al pastor if you know what that means with the pineapple and all.

OverR - I believe AggieBarstool is talking about "La Familia," not "Mi Familia." It is located on Texas Ave across the street from Dairy Queen in Bryan. (Just North of the courthouse and William J. Bryan) They have a small breakfast buffet that includes Menudo. Each time that I have had the buffet, it was delish. However, get there early! There's not many tables and it fills up quickly. My apologies if AggieBarstool is talking about something else.

Edit to add:
Mi Pueblito is one of my faves for Breakfast Tacos/Mexican breakfast. I also really like La Botana's breakfast tacos.

I've recently discovered that the southernmost quality taco "stand" is in the gas station at La Brisa and 2818. She has excellent pork and nopales, carne asada, barbacoa, etc. For those of you who think that you will spontaneously combust if you venture north of Villa Maria, check it out!

Rapas y Something Playunos? Whatever it is, is on Coulter, before you get to Texas. GREAT Flan and the Cubana torta is damn tasty!

Another vote for La Casita in Navasota.

I had fish tacos at El Vale on William J. Bryan. Very good little place. IMHO, they and Los Nortenos are tied for best salsa. My idea of good salsa involves lots of veggies in it, to where it's more like vegetable soup.

La Canasta is the new Mexican supermarket that took over the Hwy 21 AppleTree store. It's alot like Michocana on Texas and Coulter but bigger. And as far as Sol De Mexico on MLK and Texas it has the best and cheapest breakfasts in town..."$2.88 breakfasts include eggs, bacon, potatoes beans and tortillas but depends on just which plate you choose...and there hot sauce and chips are the best in town and homemade not tomatoey like others in town.

Went to El Tio on North Bryan today as a result of this thread, and WOW — the best quesadilla I ever had.

But also with two tacos and a coke, it came to almost $13, which seemed expensive for some reason but wasn't really bad.

Regardless, the food was awesome.

Since the salsa is the first priority for us, we put Gina's at the top. Big love for the fresh taste. I like Casa Rod's well enough, but it tastes like they use canned tomatoes. Other than that, it's pretty good. Most of the rest are passable.

As for the menu, there are a number of places that have hits and misses, so I couldn't narrow it down to one favorite. We just figure out exactly we're hungry for, then go to the one that makes our favorites the way we like them.

jimmyb, last week we tried Garpez on Wellborn and had a similar experience. The food was very disappointing, so I doubt we'll be back. There are too many others to try out first.

El Tio on North Bryan,
We (my coworkers and I) call it the secret taco bar. They are awesome. You would never guess that a place like that would make the best Mexican food in Texas. No one who works there speaks much English, but who cares for the food you get. I give it two thumbs up.

The Carne Deshebrada at Gina's is awesome. Just west of the tracks on Groesbeck
