Have any of you had any of this brand of turkey(It's in Tyler)? I am trying to find out how popular it is here. In the past, I have always bought them for my insurance clients, and wondered if any of you had heard of them?

Also, there is supposed to be a company that sells "the most (arguably)popular/best tasting ham" in America, somewhere in Virginia? Has anyone had it?

Oprah has ordered them. My mom's friend used to work for Greenburg and took her order once. I've never had them but my friend did assure me they were the best.

I haven't had a Greenburg in a while, and like Burge's turkeys and hams (in Lewisville Arkansas)

The two years we had it I thought it was incredibly salty, too salty AND I enjoy salty, highly seasoned food.

Maybe it was just luck of the bird.

That is what I remembered about it, too---and instead of having more of a smoky flavor (like smoked meat should have), I tasted savory (or something close to it) and salt.

When we opened the Turkey last year, our house smelled like a smokehouse for 2 weeks!

I re-googled the ham, and it was Smithfield Ham, from North Carolina. Has anyone had that before?

Not sure about the Carolina Ham, but I've had a smoked ham before...I think Virginia smoked? I want to say it was salt cured.(?) My father in-law got one and had to soak the thing in water for hours and it was still very salty. Had a good flavor, but you had to have plenty of water on hand to get through it.

Gourmet Magazine, now defunct, rated Virginia Traditions "best". I think hams can be so different stylistically that it depends upon your taste. I like Niman Ranch meats, which you can get at Central Market and online. I recall Harrington Vermont cob smoked ham and meats being mighty tasty, but that was some years back.

I've had Smithfield Hams many years ago. I believe they supply deli hams for other brands, too. I recall the ham being very good, but to me a good ham is easier to come by than a good turkey.

We had our first Greenberg last year. Smoked amazingly. Our house must have smelled like CMac's. Very smoky flavor, great look, ours was not salty. Our guest really enjoyed. We are ordering one to be delivered to the hosts of our T-Giving this year in another state.

I had Greenberg turkey something or other for about a month afterwards it seems like, and ended up making and freezing stock out of the rest.

I will probably end up buying 3 or 4 hams to try out. Any more recommendations, will be appreciated.

My brother lives in Whitehouse and always buys a Greenburg turkey for the holidays. I think it is the best smoked turkey I have eaten without a doubt. A friend of mine said that a lot of people go to Green's market in Zebzikville? (close to Temple)for smoked meats. Haven't tried it, but was packed the other day when I dropped a deer off.

McChesney's in Henderson (http://www.smoked-meats.com/) also produces some excellent smoked turkeys and hams.

I buy local from Readfields/Ruffino's daily(and love it), but I want something with a national rating appeal. I may use the turkey and ham in combination with another product at the restaurant, but the ham I would like to have at Christmas this year.

Charlie,

For mail order hams and bacon, I give my absolute highest recommendation to Petit Jean Meats in Morrilton, AR.

Make sure you order a package of bacon when you order a ham.

Me too, Molly!

I'll order the Petit Jean's ham, and see what happens. I'm still wanting to try one of the Smithfield's, and one of the Japanese style hams from Snake River, also.

I'm originally from Tyler. My family buys a bunch of Greenberg Smoked Turkeys every year and gives them out to friends/family/customers. We also freeze a few to thaw out and eat throughout the year. Needless to say, we love em! And everyone else I know who has tried one says that they'll never go back to anything else. After Oprah got turned onto them a few years ago and then mentioned them on one of her shows, sales skyrocketed. Used to be somewhat of a Tyler, Texas secret. Not anymore!

You need to look into doing a Kentucky hot brown sandwich with the Greenberg turkey Charlie - it would be awesome! Those sandwiches are pretty extreme and don't use lettuce, so it is right up your ally. You may need to buy a few extra turkeys to freeze and use around derby time.

Here's a link with info about these crazy sandwiches.

Charlie, i used to live in Virginia - not a native, tho, so the locals explained about the ham. It is indeed VERY salty. Nearly every party or function I attended that served food included Ham Biscuits - that's a thin slice of salty ham on a melt-in-your-mouth biscuit. A variation might include some grape or cherry jelly.

Good eating, I thought, with the biscuit being a nice foil for the ham.

Thoughts from a transplant to Virginia.

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

We have Greenburg turkeys every Thanksgiving and X-Mas that we spend with the mom's family. They are delicious.
