I'm class of 79 and I do not remember the custom of ring dunking. Perhaps I was out of the loop.

When did that practice start?

Thanks who8p

It was just as I thought........New Army.

I graduated in 84, never heard of it myself. I knew guys that did a pitcher on northgate, but they didn't need an excuse. Pesonally I feel it is an embarassment to the school and a monument to the stupidity of college students everywhere. We can't break the top ten but we can swill beer with the best of them....

gag cough spew... I would also jail the parents moronic enough to actually come up here to witness this crap...

wow it looks like someone didn't get invited to enough parties when he was in college.

If you are refering to me rook, you are right. I had just finished an 8 years in the military, including a tour in Vietnam. I had a family to support and worked full time and carried 12 hours.

Parties were not on my schedule.

I'm sorry parties were your major objective. When I was your age attitudes like yours were at SMU or tu, not Texas A&M.....thus my New Army retort.

Remember this is Texas A&M, if it has been more than twice, it automatically becomes tradition. It doesn't have to make sense or look good to those that are not familiar with the university. That way we can always fall back on the whole, 'from the outside looking in you wouldn't understand, from the inside looking out, we can't make sense of it either' mantra.

There's an awful lot of students here that have no idea or no memory that BCS was bone dry until I think 1973 or so. There's a real reason the Highway 21 bridge over the Brazos river is still called (by some) Whiskey Bridge.

I thought it was tradition stemming way back, but then again what do I know. I dunked mine spring 08 and we had a blast. I know its looked down upon by some but Aggies are heavy drinkers.

Not sure if its still true but at one time the Chicken held the record for most beer served per square foot of any establishment in the country.

I dunked my ring with a big group of friends when you used to be able to do it outside the Chicken. Yes, some parents came, many other friends came, it actually was one of the most fun days of my life. A day I'll never forget, and not just because we were drinking, although we obviously were.

Traditions begin because they are fun, and this is no exception. We did it because it was fun, and that's what college students do. Good friends, good laughs, an excuse for a celebration...what could be wrong with that?

Just wanted to give my two cents. I don't think drinking is "cool" or anything like that, but the day of my ring dunking was a great day. I even threw up everywhere because it was too much beer for me, but I have no regrets! Just because you might not like drinking doesn't mean to have to hate everyone else that enjoys it, even in moderation.

Class of 81 here and don't remember anything about it. I checked with my college roommate and she doesn't either.

Class of '87 and I didn't hear of it until a friend graduating around '95 did it. Wouldn't have mattered - don't like beer and was working full-time and going to school full-time. Didn't leave much time for partying. Now, I have heard of the tradition of putting your ring in a bowl of ice cream and eating all the ice cream. If they'd been doing that in '87, I probably could have found time for that! I will say getting my Aggie ring was a special day. Although, they didn't have the big ring day festivities that they have now. Just stood in line at the Pavilion until it was your turn. But it was still special and the only piece of jewelry I wear every day besides my wedding ring.

I agree with AgCPA - "ring dunking" is among the stupidest things I have ever heard of. Any practice that promotes binge drinking also promotes killing innocent people on the highways.
rhoswen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, the decision to drink & drive kills people on the highways.

SumAggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no - the decision to drink to EXCESS and drive kills people; innocent people. There is no justification for slamming down a pitcher of beer. It is stupid. Turn it around any way you want and the bottom line is still "it is stupid".
rhoswen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
ah but the decision to drink in excess by itself does not kill people.

Tell that to someone that has had a child die from alcohol poisoning due to binge drinking.

If you die from binge drinking thats your own stupid fault IMO. I'm sure my Dad would be terribly sad but he would also call me a dumba$$ for being that irresponsible.

The five beers you get in a 60 ounce pitcher will get you drunk, may get you sick. But it will not kill you, as long as you don't get yourself behind the wheel.
