I can't say I've looked at too many houses built post 2003 around here, so it's possible. However, there are many more houses that, even if true, would not fit under that code.

I'm not saying it's not a good idea, just not something to expect unless you put it in yourself.

I shut off the city valve in the concrete box. I used regular tools in the garage to do it. It doesn't have any special valved requiring a special tool.
I do no have a redundant valve...that is why he suggested I call a plumber and have one installed. I've turned it off and on numerous times over the years to shut water off from the house. It was the first time I ever called the city out---and yes, the leak was on their side.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the plumber didn't do it right the first time unless it broke in exactly the same place.

It was the same place, unfortunately, and there was so much mud surrounded the valve that we had to dig up a ton of our property. A real pain in the ass.

Now our sprinklers aren't working, however.

So does anybody have any sprinkler guys the would recommend?

Prince?

How was the original repair done? Was it one of the gasket slip-on unions? I've had one of those separate underground and flood my yard.

I would say Prince. However Jayci, when my mom called a week ago to get her sprinklers fixed, they were backlogged for 2-3 weeks. Her first appt would have been at the end of this month. Call and give it a shot though, maybe someone called and cancelled an appt. Seems like business is good for them.

To clarify the questions raised:

1. The only time there's a re-connect fee is when you terminate service and then re-start service.

2. If you try to operate the valve on the City side of the meter, and break it - that is an expensive repair (around $500) because the main has to be shut off.

Residential water meters should have a valve on both sides - we have been installing a customer valve inside the meter box for the resident's convenience, but some of the older homes have a customer valve in a separate box, a couple feet away, and it can get grown over and lost. If you don't have a valve on the customer side of the meter, it's a good idea to install one, because we ask that you not try to operate the valve on the City side.

I hope this clears things up ...

TO REPORT BACK...

Our main line busted right before the meter box, and I am so grateful that my SO and his father were able to fix it. Not a day after they fixed that did our sprinkler system stop working altogether as well.

I called The Grounds Crew per one of the recommendations and they came out yesterday afternoon and were very nice and explained everything to me that was wrong. Two valves were worn out and one sprinkler head. It was $225 before tax to replace all three things and they were so quick. I am not sure how much these kinds of things cost, but that was not the original quote and they were able to come down on the price for this poor homeowner. I will absolutely use them again!
