Has anyone recently purchased milk that goes bad 4-6 days before the expiration date? I've had this trouble twice in a row at the H-E-B on Holleman. I got so mad, I switched to the Southwest Pkwy. Kroger. What luck...I had the same thing happen tonight with the Kroger milk! My fridge is cooling perfectly normal. I'm getting very frustrated. What gives? Am I the only one this is happening to?

What milkfat are you using? Whole milk keeps longer than 2%, which keeps longer than 1 %, which keeps longer than nonfat.

Frustrating, though. We've switched to almond milk.

my fridge is clean. I thought that was made clear when I said the expiration dates had not even hit. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem from the same stores.

Me either. Bought 2 gallons of 2% AT HEB last Wednesday and both were ok. Then again, I didn't drink them myself...just the kids. Maybe that is why they have been acting so strange since last week?????

Did you buy the same brand from both stores? If so it may be a problem with their packaging.

Perhaps you are not closing the lids completely? Or like other posters have said its something with your fridge.

This happens to me occasionally whenever I buy store brands and even Borden. If this happens too often I switch brands and that solves it. I've always have had good luck with Lilly, Oak Farms/Schepps brands.

Don't keep your milk next to your open sardine tin...

I had the same thing happen when I bought milk at HEB. The milk I bought at Kroger on Southwest Parkway was fine.

I had a friend get bad milk(lactose free) at HEB awhile back. She took it back. They told her she could get some more. If I remember right, she went back a week later or so, and bought some more. She got home and realized she had the same bad milk she had bought earlier in the week. The seal was open just like the one she had opened. They put it back on the shelf. Maybe it was a coincidence but I doubt it.

Nope, we buy milk from Kroger and HEB all the time. I get a gallon for office fridge for cereral, and I usually have it go a day or 2 past the expiration and it's still good.

Springdale 2% from Kroger.

Sounds like something is wrong with your fridge.

Get a thermometer and make sure your refrigerator always stays below 40° F.

Try keeping the milk at the back of the bottom shelf (usually the coldest part of the fridge).

Don't take the milk out of the fridge until you're ready to pour it, and put it back promptly.

You definitely need to check your fridge first. If it's bad from two different stores (and I buy six gallons of milk per week from the CS HEB with no issues), then the chances are that it's not the milk so much as your fridge temp.

I had the same problem with the CS HEB recently. Fridge is cold but the gallon of 2% went bad well before the expiration date.

Get the milk from the lowest possible shelf(below eye level). The lower you go, the later the experation date.

I lived in an apartment where the fridge seemed cool and everything else would be fine, but the milk would definitely spoil.

I didn't want to mess with the manager, so I purchased a small fridge to keep milk and sodas in.

In that case, without taking a thermometer to it, it would seem the fridge was ok, but the milk test proved otherwise.

I have the same problem with both HEB & Kroger. I started purchasing milk from different stores and have not had the problem again. I think it has to be something with how they are storing the milk. I've had 6 bad gallons - 2 went to someone else (& their fridge, same problem). All within the last month.

I buy whole milk...usually from CS HEB but occassionally from SWP Kroger as well...always stays good for a few days past the expiration date.

Do what I do...buy powdered milk. You will never have those issues. I go through a couple boxes every two weeks. Yum!

But the real question is...are you actually putting the milk in the fridge?

If not, I think I know what your problem is.

Perhaps it is not the fridge but the length of time that you are in the store shopping or the length of time that it takes to get home and get your milk back into the fridge. It is starting to get hot outside.
