So the Longhorn sells their corner lot for a million or more to Walgreen's... and then the taxpayers of Bryan have to give them more money to help them move?

Facts might be misleading... The Longhorn doesn't own the property it sits on as I recall. It is owned by HEB and they lease it.
I'm not usually in favor of these subsidies, but this one should work. We know the Longhorn Tavern will bring customers to downtown (the parking can't be worse) and they will renovate an empty building and increase the general traffic in the area as well as maintain the sales tax revenue they have been contributing.
The grant money is already budgeted and no other business has applied. They will spend much more than $112,000 renovating that building.
Besides, it's a good chicken fried steak.

The Longhorn is an institution in this town, and the downtown location will be awesome. I think it's a good move for everyone involved, and look forward to dining there when they open!
It's a win-win situation, exactly what a grant like this should be used for.

This property needs a lot of work and if this grant helps to improve a property a little off the beaten path that otherwise would not have been remodeled, then that's awesome.

The food at Longhorn always tastes good but the last time we were there the chicken fried steak was mostly batter and there was very little meat.
The owner having her special parking spot up front bugs me. My family has been in business a long time and the up front parking spots have always been for the customers. We always parked around back. Just seems a little arrogant to me.

This is exactly what the downtown grants are for and there couldn't really be a more deserving applicant. Anyway, it kept them from moving out to the country, which almost happened before they decided to stay in Bryan and move downtown.
She does come off a little snobby. Sodolacks blows them out of the water. Just my thoughts.

They're just now trying to get funding for renovations at the new location. I'm pretty sure it will be a while before the old location shuts down.

im currently working on the Longhorns new location and its gonna be bigger than the old location. it will have outdoor patio seating and a party room a bar ect. I hope down town bryan keeps renovating b/c i love the down town feel and would like to see bryan be turned around esp. downtown with some roof top bars or resturaunts

Are the Longhorn Steakhouse and the Longhorn Tavern the same? Here, they have a great steakhouse chain called Longhorn and I love the Flo's Fillet. I just assumed maybe it was the same, just called Tavern in Texas insead of Steakhouse.

agreed....dont know too many business owners who reserve themselves a parking spot front and center...most owners park as far away as possible and leave the front spots for customers
The deal with Walgreens fell through from what I hear. Got caught in the liquidity crunch last quarter of 08.

Walgreens has delayed expansion until further notice. Burned alot of developers bad, really bad. When the market turns around, alot of the sites that had passed committee and been approved wont be started for at least a couple of years if ever due to the time required to put it back under contract and through committee. Dont know to many people that have said they are willing to walk back into that dance...
We heard that by July first they want to open
we have to move the massive Air handler currently being used in the old location. Then revamp it to get back up to 15 ton operation, so when we do that it's getting close

Longhorn Tavern and Longhorn Steakhouse are NOT part of the same operation as mentioned above.
For anyone traveling; Longhorn Steakhouse is a chain in the East. They have an incredible salmon. Steak are good too, but Texans already have access to lots of great steaks. Try the salmon.

Longhorn Steakhouse is not just in the East, there are many locations in Florida as well. Being a chain, it's not my favorite and I'd never take business associates there.

SassyAg: If you consider Florida as "east", you will piss off the entire upper EAST COAST. Florida is south of Georgia, N Carolina, S Carolina, Tennessee, etc. Therefore, Florida is the South darlin (wink). Tropical South, but it is further South than many parts of Texas.
