College Station's street layout is gridlock waiting to happen. Munson should have been a thru street -- at least three lanes. Holleman needs to be five lanes from 2818 to the bypass. There is not a north/south road connecting Rock Prairie and Graham all the way from Longmire to Victoria. Longmire/Rock Prairie/Bypass 6 area is a disaster. The new Rock Prairie exit will do nothing to ease the gridlock on Longmire and Rock Prairie during rush hours.

Is there any reason why the speed limit on Munson Rd in College Station is 25mph? I know there is one spot that has some twists and turns...but why the entire road?

(this is the same speed limit as some school zones????)

It's a narrow / residential road.

- Francis and Lincoln, sorry for the confusion. (in between the two stop signs)

I was just wondering if there was some reason this rd was 25mph. Sounds like there have been some issues & long history in the past there.

I can't say I was trying to get anywhere faster or anything like that, was just driving like normal. When the officer asked me what the speed limit was...I told him 30 mph. He then informed me I was going 8 over.

Again, obviously I was speeding and will do my civic duty and pay the fine and everything. But I hate when I get blind-sided at these traps. It makes me think that the motorcycle cop was just to live up to his daily quota. In the end, I'll be doing my defensive driving test soon for going 33mph. Oh well....

Welcome to 2001.

Just be glad the residents of Munson allow you to use their street. It wasn't always so.

All the way to Spring Loop?

It is only 25mph from Dominik to Lincoln.

According to Urban Dictionary:

II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.

I was calling you a newb not a nOOb....

TAXPREP - nope, The reason I'm wondering is because I got a speeding ticket for going 33 mph yesterday in between Lincoln and Spring Loop.

Kinda hacked me off..If I'm going to get a speeding ticket....at least I could have been going faster than 33mph. I got a wussy ticket?

Why in the hell do we do this crap? Pick a name and stick with it. Quit naming roads 5 different things. Grr.

Just be glad the speed humps are gone.

There's a lot of history regarding Munson Ave, it's residents, and everyone else that likes to use it as a through street. Therefore, it's monitored by CSPD pretty often and you'd better not be going over the posted limit.
The Anchor

Why would you want to go any faster than 25? The road is riddled with potholes, people always walking/running on that road, and there are turns and stop signs? What is the point of saving 2-5 seconds by going faster?
TexasRebel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
there was once a barricade at one end.

If i remember correctly, there was just a block on one lane that said "Road Closed to Through Traffic"...so the road was basically open unless there was a CSPD car at each end.

I'm confused... Lincoln and Spring Loop are the same street, just on opposite sides of University Drive.

Do you mean that you were ticketed between Francis and Lincoln, or maybe between Dominik and Francis?

All of Munson north of Dominik is a 25-mph zone. There is a long, sordid history behind that. Munson was perhaps the first street in town where the NIMBYs exerted their influence, before Woodcreek and Sandstone and Southside.
That is a story best left for another day, but the legacy of all of that nonsense is that Munson still has a 25-mph speed limit in effect for most of its length.

This is the best post in this thread. Too bad the timestamp confusion buried it.

chunk, unless someone's stolen a sign, the 25 mph limit on Munson is clearly posted.

I live close by, drive that road every day.

The cop was there because folks who live on that street frequently call in and ask for patrols to monitor for speeding. It's pretty routine, except for the actual posted speed limit. Other roads in town get the same treatment.

Sorry that it bit you in the wallet.

Jaberwookie....not arguing the ticket or postings of street signs. Just curious on the reason why Munson was 25mph.

However, I still got a wussy ticket

Now let's talk about why there are 3 different Appomattox streets that do not connect with each other!

summary: one of the old battlegrounds
grumpy old people didn't appreciate young whippersnappers speeding down Munson. They had some political clout with former and current council stiffs that blocked Munson entirely. The rest of the city threw a fit about the loss of a through street and increased traffic on other roads avoiding the roadblock. So the road was reopened and the speed limit reduced as a compromise.

Like every other 'neighborhood integrity' issue, 95% of people get thrown under the bus because of the actions of a small number of knuckleheads. Whether 25, 35, or 50 miles per hour there will still be a handfull of idiots causing problems for the rest of us.

You got caught in the middle of a long running battle between townies and the handful of students that treat this town like a playground. That speed trap has caught mostly folks like yourself doing 35 rather than the small number of idiots it was designed to go after.

anyone else remember the election to change the speed limit from 20 to 30 and remove the speed humps? It passed, I do not remember a follow-up election to allow a change back down to 25, though I lived out of town for 2 years. I checked the city ordinance and it is indeed 25, did council change this? Or was there another election?
code_dog
How long do you want to ignore this user?
one must also consider the context for that old battle. At that time, Texas Ave was closed for construction between G Bush Dr and University, thus Munson was a very desirable alternative to Texas Ave for N-S travel.

ALSO, Blinn College had just opened its Bryan campus but still had a considerable number of classes meeting at the Woodstone shopping center at Dominik and Harvey.

There was a HUGE amount of traffic on Munson, mostly students shuffling between classes at Blinn.

Rather than wait for TX Ave to open back up, and for Blinn to close its Woodstone operations down, and then see what the situation on Munson was like, the "townies", as you put it, almost succeeded in turning a public street into a long, taxpayer-funded driveway.
taxpreparer

The election was to remove the "traffic calming" devices, and increased the speed limit from 20mph to 25mph.

Personally, I think the city should pass an ordinance declaring the maximum speed on any street less than 16ft wide to be 25mph.
