I was at the new Premium Outlet in Cypress the other day, and noticed in the food court another clone of Laynes Chicken Fingers. Its called Chicken Now: http://www.chicken-now.com/index.html

"Chicken NOW™ is a unique concept using a simplistic and fresh approach to fast food dining. We have simplified the menu to focus on "made to order" chicken fingers."

How can Rasing Canes and Chicken Now takeover this concept and clam it as their own?

Laynes has not been good in years.

because laynes is not the original.

not saying anyone of the three is but if you step out of college station there are similar concepts every where.

Raising Canes does not have crappy food and service, so how can it be a copy cat of Layne's?

From what I heard, Layne is the copycat. Cane's food is terrible.

I like Layne's better, but I can't go there unless I drive through. My kids don't need to hear the profanities spewing from behind the counter. I realize you are in college, but when a guy comes in with his young sons, clean it up a bit.

Quit your yapping and go try it before you talk.

I have no problem with a restaurant that puts out almost $20,000 a month to support Aggie Athletics. To all those idiots that hiss whenever Raising Cane's is mentioned at an Aggie sporting event, you guys are idiots!

All three of those chicken places suck.

Agree with Angry Beaver.

However, Chicken Express is better than all of them.

First of all...Layne's is not an Aggie tradition. The Dixie Chicken would be an example of that phrase. Layne's opened in the 90's in College Station, just like Raisin Cane's did in Baton Rouge. I like them both but Raisin Cane's chicken is never frozen. Why don't you ask Layne's that question? Secondly, Layne's is a small hole in the wall restaurant and their strips are "soggy". If you are going to compare, make sure you have your facts correct. Cane's sauce, chicken and slaw, is much better than Layne's. Layne's may be one of the first here but not the first overall. It would be like saying that Church's was the first here when in actuality, KFC was the first in the nation. Any day, I prefer Cane's to Layne's! The restaurant is cleaner, the food is better and supports the Aggies just as well if not better than most restaurants here. Just look at the baseball field "billboards". Before you start talking all this "Aggie" stuff, make sure you have your info correct! BTW...Chicken Express is excellent but it does not offer the same variety of seasonings/sauces that these two do. I would say that I prefer Chicken Express but they are also an addition to the B/CS area. In closing...Look at how many stores Cane's has in the small amount of time that they have been open to Layne's or Chicken Express. Obviously, they are doing something right! Cane's is not another copy cat. Layne's also took this idea from another chain. Do your research!

I just wish Chicken Express would offer the same type of sauce as Layne's or Raising Canes. In truth the sauses at those two places are the only thing that keeps me goin back.

I've tried all three...and I would give Cane's a slight edge. HOWEVER...its just chicken strips! Who cares who was first, last, or otherwise? I get bored with all three of them!

There's a Cane's challenge at every baseball game, including logos on the screen and PA mentions. There was also one at men's and women's basketball, so I'd bet that $20K estimate is about accurate.

Plus, if the basketball team either scores 70 points or holds the other team under 60 (which was almost every game), you could take your ticket in and get a "buy one get one free" meal at Cain's.

With an average of around 7k at each game, they were taking a risk of losing serious money the day after every home game if even a fraction of those people took them up on it.

Oh, and I'm surprised the Health Dept. hasn't shut the original Layne's down yet. It is gross. I eat at Cain's because there I don't have to worry about crap falling from the air ducts into my food.

The bolded part of this quote cannot be stated enough.

It's just chicken strips. Why do you think every restaurant in town carries chicken strips on the kids menu? It's just chicken strips.

it's not like they're donating this money. they get advertising out of it just like any other company that sponsors a&m athletics. layne's can't do this because they aren't a corporate chain.

Yes.

No, the actual amount of free meals they give out is about $15,000 during the basketball season and a little less during baseball season. That's on top of the $20K.

Yes and no. The amount is significantly higher due to advertising during football and basketball seasons, but donating money to a school like A&M also helps with taxes. So, if you want to look at it in a way that the announcer charges $20K just to say Raising Cane's name, then no. If you want to look at it in the way that Raising Canes still puts out $20K a month in support (donation, advertising and promoting) of Aggie Athletics then yes.

I don't care if anyone wants to say that "they're getting advertising" out of it, but $20K a month is still $20K a month that otherwise the department wouldn't have. Sure, half of the crowd hisses when the announcer mentions their name, but over 2,000 people got a free meal out of it just this past month alone.

On that note about the baseball games, Raising Cane's puts out a little over $10K for baseball. If you ask me, that's a lot of money considering they haven't mentioned them as a sponsor at games, and the Challenge coupons aren't even handed out (they're placed at the ticket booth for you to pick up if you see them) like they're supposed to.

Chicken strip conceptual frame work

- I like chicken
- I like fried chicken even better
- I don't like chicken bones
- Chicken nuggets are for suckers

Now if there was only some way to combine these criteria.......

why? Layne's doesn't have nearly the advertising budget that Canes has because they aren't a corporate chain. What is incorrect about that?

I have done some work with sponsorships on a much smaller scale that A&M athletics, but you would be really surprised at how much it costs to be an "official sponsor" of a team or event. This is mostly an educated guess, but I would think the rest of the companies that sponsor A&M basketball(Wendy's to name one) and other sports probably give something around the 20K range as well.

Again, this isn't a "donation." It's a sponsorship agreement. A donation would be if they gave the money and received no recognition from it.

while cane's is a bigger chain every cane's location supports itself. it's like they are their own company w/in a company. whatever money they donate/market/advertise/give (which ever way you wanna see it) takes away from their bottom line.

and i also agree, it's just chicken!

Corporate chains are in the business of making money, not giving it away. Canes is not McDonald's, any advertising they do at an A&M event is for the one location on Texas Ave. So at the end of the day, the Texas Ave location has to make enough money to recoup the expense of the ads.

Layne's could do the exact same thing, just like Veritas, Christophers, and countless other local businesses that Advertise at A&M events.

Hmm, I like Laynes better for several reasons.

1. Canes sauce tasted similar, but seems watered down.
2. I like Laynes toast better than Canes french bread, though I do wish they would toast it on both sides.
3. Laynes is locally owned

Bottom line. I eat at both.

Yea, I think we're getting caught up in semantics here. Oh well, I'm going to chicken e for lunch anyway, mostly because they give you an extra side when you get water as a drink. Man I wish more places did that.
