So you didn't drink underage ever, and you actually sit around thinking about how dangerous drinking and going out are? You sound like a pretty cool dude..

I've carried many drunk girls to their homes. Too many young ladies don't think of possible consequences of getting that drunk.

I've watched a guy from my dorm leaning over a car puking, he leaned to far and broke his nose.

I've been out plenty and made sure my friends got home safely.

O, so you were that guy huh....to each their own I guess...

Also...drinking underage doesn't = getting beligerantly drunk. People of all ages do that, as i've said several times, and that will be the case no matter what the drinking age is.

008 - people of all ages do it but younger people do it more. That I have seen and unfortunately we seem to see more young people with alcohol poisoning, some end up surviving and some do not. I have a story about that (not about me) that I'll have to share with you someday.

Maybe so...But there are 21 and 22 year olds....and even older..that drink to the point of endangering themselves too. I just don't think that a 21 vs 18 drinking age puts a dent in this at all. The people that wait until they are 21 to drink aren't the ones that you need to worry about binge drinking and getting behind the wheel. Those that DO drink before they are 21 are responsible enough for the most part (when you compare them to 21 and up college kids at least),and the ones in that group that do really stupid things will do so regardless of what the law is.

008 you may be right to some extent but like it has been said before, until the law changes, people who are under 21 cannot legally drink. If they want to - that is their decision but they should be willing to face the consequences if caught.

I'm curious about the 80% of underage aggies drinking statistic.

I don't think a study has ever been done for A&M students, but when I was 18-20, I think it was safe to say that about 8 of the 10 people I knew my age drank at least on ocassion. I can only think of a handfull of people that NEVER drink.

And part of the survey showed that a majority of aggies only drink 0-3 drinks when they go out. They made lots of t-shirts about it.

008, once again you are indicating that you would approve of the law being changed to make the drinking age 25 years old.

If you really care about the drinking age, complaining about CSPD will not help you out. They MUST enforce the law. Law enforcement agencies that purposely do not enforce the law get in all sorts of trouble. What will help is writing your state legislature. On the "I drive in bike lanes" thread, I actually wrote and sent letters to Austin. I doubt it will change, but I am at least doing something more than getting into arguments with random people on texags (which you and I seem to love to do )

Here is a brief report of the survey from 2002.

http://studentlife.tamu.edu/adep/resources/core.htm

quote:
*

91.9% of Aggies believe the average student uses alcohol once a week or more, but the reality is only 56% use alcohol once a week or more
*

More than 4 out of 5 Aggies do not brag about their use of alcohol.
*

In the past year, 50% of students have never driven a car after drinking.
*

In the past year, 8 out of 10 students were not in trouble with authorities (police, ResLife staff, administrators) due to drinking.
*

73% of Aggies have not used marijuana in the last year
*

87% of Aggies would prefer not to have drugs available at parties they attend
*

93% of Aggies have not used ecstasy in the last year

Pro S, I don't mean to sound as if I think this has anything to do with the CSPD...Talking about how many MIPs are handed out and talking about what the drinking age should be are 2 seperate issues, and the subject kind of turned that way.

As far as those numbers....Keep in mind that was 6 years ago. Also, they don't really refute my assumption that 80% of Aggies drink before they are underage. I just think that many would tell you that they've drank at least a few times (likely more than a few) before their 21st birthday. As to the 0-3 drinks when they go out number...in terms of people that are actually at a party or at the bar....I don't think thats true anymore. I'm not saying that everyone has WAY more than that, but 0-3 means "not drunk" and theres no way that half of the people at a party or at northgate are "sober" and in theory could drive legally. If that were the case, we woudn't need carpool. The numbers about drugs sound abot right though.

008 also remember that people tend to hang out with people like themselves. The people that you run with probably drink. The ones that don't drink most likely hang out with a different crowd. I say that because people who don't drink usually don't like to hang out with drunks or potential drunks. I like to have a beer or two or a glass or wine or two but I can't handle being around a bunch of drunks. As a result, there are some people that I don't socialize with anymore due to the fact that they get on my last nerve when they drink.

Maybe a more accurate statement might be 80% of the people that 008 hangs out with drink???

I see what you are saying, and thats partially true...If you asked someone who didn't drink at all how many A&M students (or underage A&M students) they thought drank, it would probably be less than 80%. I'd still argue that it's a higher % than a lot of you think though, and theres no doubt in my mind that its way more than half.

I'm not trying to say that you're completely wrong or that I'm completely right, but I'm basing that guess off of what I honestly believe based on being around people...not just friends and people I hang out with, but everyone.

I also didn't say that 80% of us are "drunks"...drinking can mean having a drink or 2 with dinner or at a party.
