I promised that I would request this information and I received it this morning. The figures given include all Minor in Possession tickets issued (alcohol and tobacco). They are not broken out in our system. For 2006, officers issued 742 MIPs or an average of 2.03 citation per day. In 2007, officers issued 784 MIPs or an average of 2.15 citations per day.

I wonder how many of those were on game days.

Sounds like a lot less than there used the be. According to this old article the UPD/CSPD "Loud Noise and Alcohol Task Force" wrote 64 in one day.

I'm gussing that TLIAC's numbers don't take UPD into account...but I could be wrong..

UPD is a seperate police force. Why would their citations show up in CSPD data?

I don't suppose that includes TABC writing tickets in bars and restaurants.

I won't quit bashing them for having 3 or 4 bike cops in certain appartment complexes on weekend nights ID'ing every single person they see holding a drink...if thats what you're asking.

Wow...those numbers are a lot lower than i thought they would be. I am assuming they don't include TABC on northgate and football weekends. 2.15 per day is low, but kind of skewed for college students though. Lets say 30 weeks of school per year. and 3 days of drinking (thurs-sat), since I'm sure CSPD doesn't have too many complaints on tuesday nights. thats 90 days over 784 MIPS....about 8.4 a (weekend) night. Thats still a lot lower than I expected

2.15 per day is actually kind of a lot when you consider they are pretty much only giving them out 3 days a week.

and it doesn't include upd or tabc, which is the biggest joke of a government organization in the country.

Wasn't the tabc almost trashed a few years ago? I remember the story about them giving the guy a PI (or maybe arresting him) for being "drunk" in a Dallas hotel bar...in reality the guy had had a few drinks and was STAYING at the hotel. They are without a doubt a joke, no matter how you spin it. I love how easy they are to spot in bars too....usually its an awkard looking 20 something year old who is trying to "fit in", but he doesn't have any more luck than he did back in college when he likely had no friends to go out with in the first place.

Yeah! I am joining with 008! How DARE CSPD enforce laws?!? Don't they know there are better things to do with their time than enforce the law? Gosh!

There is no way you can blame CSPD for TABC and UPD giving MIPs. Some blame us for enough stuff already. Even as one poster calculated using weekends (Thurs, Fri & Sat) only and it coming to 8 point something, that's not much. Less than one per officer per night. I would guess the figures have dropped in the last few years. The call load for our officers has really increased, not allowing as much time for preventive patrol.

Don't get me started on TABC. My freshman year at A&M, my buddy and I pulled up in the Harry's parking lot one evening with the intention of doing some dancing (not with each other!). My cell phone rang when we were still in my truck so we didn't get out right away, since I was talking on the phone. When we finally did get out and start walking to the club, this unmarked car pulls up in front of us and 2 TABC "officers" get out and proceed to cuss us out, trying to get us to admit we were drinking in my truck. Neither of us had touched a drop that night. They asked me if they could search my truck and I said hell no. This pissed them off even more and they said they had probable cause since they had followed me from Texas Ave. and I was swerving the whole way. I picked my buddy up from University Tower, on University Dr., and hadn't been on Texas at all. Lying SOBs. When I called them on this they backed off trying to search my truck. I was extremely pissed off about the way we were treated when we did NOTHING wrong. They called me a "lying son of a b*tch," f this and f that. Bunch of losers is what they are. At least CSPD and UPD serve a purpose.

wow, since when did partying at college station only go on 3 days a week.

the bird is open 7 days a week. 2.15 per day probably sounds about right.

So you wouldn't mind them coming up to your back door late at night and looking through the window into your house? Or when you sit out by your pool having them come by every 2 hours and make you show ID because you are having a drink poolside? Then they get pissy because you don't bring your wallet with you to go swimming, so you have to sit there while they have to call in to run your record to verify your age. They did all that regularly at the apartment complexes in CS while I was there.

As for the undercover officers on Northgate most of them stuck out like sore thumbs. One couple/partners had a typical looking chubby guy with a corp haircut but the problem was he was always partnered with a black female officer. That really made them stand out and after the first weekend most of the people out on the promenade figured out what they were doing except for the wasted freshmen.

Man, life must be hell in college these days. The only trouble we had regarding noise violations and underage drinking we brought upon ourselves. Of course, that was 10+ years ago. Eons. Back when there were no entrance requirements.

If my window is open, the police can legally look inside. That's why they look in the windows of cars without consent. If I am going to drink in public, I usually always have my ID with me. I think it is just being smart to carry your ID when drinking. You never know when you will have to provide proof of age. What is more aggravating, having to carry an ID or spending 15 minutes with the police?

If you want to be an idiot and drink underage, why do you do it in public and complain about the cops harassing you? If you are of age, just carry an ID. If may be a hassle, but the police have a legal right to check your age. Make it easy on yourself. If you want to be a hard ass and not carry an ID, fine.

However, the drinking age was 18, then 19, then 21 and I was always one or two years ahead.

I am aware they legally can look in your windows. The question was if you would mind them doing it at your home? Coming up to the back of your house and looking in every weekend late at night. The examples I gave all happened in gated apartment complexes. This is as private as most college students can afford. Not all can afford an estate out in the country to allow them to legally drink at the pool they pay for without having to prove they are there legally. I'm sure the police have permission to patrol these gated complexes but it is where many college students live. This is their home yet they constantly have to prove they are obeying the law. It is a hassle if you live there sometimes bordering on harassment as often as they come by. Whether justified or not many students in College Station have developed ill feelings toward police in their stay there. I personally had never thought anything but the best about police officers until my stay in CS. It is taking a while to get back used to the feeling of police being there to help and not out to get me. I'm not saying don't enforce the laws, but going out of the way like they used to just for MIP's is extreme. If the justification for it is to keep kids from driving drunk then why not just have more patrols out giving DUI's? It is scary driving in CS just after 2am or most anytime late at night for that matter.

Fine, I never drank while underage, so I will call them idiots. There are so many risks of going out and getting wasted, underaged or not.

What gated complex are you talking about because I know of at least one that hires off-duty officers to work the complex at night.

99-watch it.

I have seen various levels of these things happening at Melrose, Sterling, Campus Lodge, and Fox run that I can recall. Most of the looking in at Melrose and Sterling. Mainly standing by the patios and looking through sliding glass doors but sometimes smaller windows too. I was in a bedroom once when I saw them looking in the window from outside. These were all uniformed CSPD bicycle officers from what I could see.

Edited to add the time period was 2001-2005.

TLIAC: my dad pulled that stunt on me.... never drinking underage...

I have to say that does date you

on a different note, I do think that the drinking in this town is on the most part very irresponsible and fully support all law enforcement who work the butts off to keeps us safe from ourselves and those who can't limit themselves.

None of those complexes were the one I was thinking of. However, most of the time when officers are working special assignments they are working where we have had problems or are responding to management's requests for special patrols.

BTW - Curtains and window blinds work wonders when closed.

I was an idiot. There, does that help?

Sometimes, I still do idiotic things.

Remember what I always tell you, just because someone else breaks the law does not give you precedent to do the same.

who9p - thanks for reinforcing 99. He needs no help from you at all. My 19 year old twin sons don't help with the age thing either. If I try to fib on the age thing and they are around they are quick to remind me that with them being 19 the math just doesn't work anymore.

(note when you talk about claiming to be younger instead of older than you are it's a fib not a lie)
