I live in Houston now so I drive Hwy 6 daily. Yesterday on my way home from work, I saw 4 State Troopers and 1 Brazos Sheriff in the first 2 miles of the construction zone on 6!! I have never seen this many. I guess they are cracking down again.

Yep - it was great. The cops had two people pulled over right by the fireworks stand, but some idiot in a maroon Explorer didn't seem to care. He blew by me at about 75 (probably figuring that they were occupied and wouldn't come after him), only to get nailed by an oncoming DPS as soon as he topped the next hill. The wife and I were cracking up. Crazy thing is, the guy looked like he wanted to run for a second. While the trooper was turning around, the guy floored it and took off - after about 1/2 a mile, he tried to duck between two cars in the slow lane (as if the cop would just give up). I hope that cop threw teh book at that moron...

Good, they need to work the stretch closer to the river better. People tend to pick up speed shortly after the fireworks stand. We were out that way a few weeks ago and we were the only ones going around 55-60. Everyone else was blowing past us.

They pass me too but I rarely see cops in the morning to catch anyone.

Yeah, but they've been stepping it up in the morning, too. I saw a trooper at 6am on Monday and followed a constable from the Navasota River to Greens Prairie this morning. It was nice not getting blown off the road for a change.

I set the cruise control around 55 - 57 and move to the passing lane when I see faster drivers coming up behind me. Most of the time I get next to or close to someone going the same speed as me and have a rolling road block. and yes I know it's not right but I am the person doing the speed limit. and yes I know I can be a jerk sometimes.

I hate to say it, but I think you might be making an even more dangerous situation by creating a makeshift roadblock. That probably just makes an already aggressive driver even more aggressive and impatient - as well as adding a case of road rage targeted at you into the mix.

That might force the driver to slow down, but it will probably also encourage them to tailgate you at high speeds and take a bigger risk by trying to force their way around you. Thus, creating a more dangerous situation than if you had just let them pass by at 70.

With that being said, I'm glad that area is being patrolled heavily again.

JHLrealtor, exactly who are you speaking of in your "guess they have forgotten about all the kids who died through there". Are you talking about the Troopers that work that stretch?

This is a very stupid thing to do.

I'm not someone who speeds excessively but I hate people that do this to others just as much as I hate the people going too fast. It's very, very dumb.

"I'm the person doing the speed limit" does not justify the action. Just let the person go and make their own mistakes.

I'm referring to the folks that speed through that area. I think it is great that there is a heavy law presence right now.

I have never verified this claim, but I have heard for the last 20 years that Hwy. 6 between College Station and Navasota has been among the most dangerous stretches of highways in America. I hate going 55 too, but it is apparantly necessary.

Wolfman03, you raise a very valid point.
The sister of a close friend of mine lost her husband in a road-rage shooting several years ago due to just exactly this sort of situation.

Now she's a widow with two elementary-age boys to raise on her own. She had to grab control of their Suburban from the passenger side while her husband bled to death from a single gunshot wound. Thankfully, the kids were not in the car at the time.

All that, just because the guy did not want to let someone blow by him at 20+ over the speed limit.

Did my friend's bro-in-law deserve that? Hell, no. Did he to provoke it to some extent? Hell yes.

I can't say I've never acted like a a-hole on the road, but these days it's too easy for people to respond with gunfire or other crazy behavior.

Just something to think about.

Been driving CS to H-town for 3.5 years, Labor Day Weekend this year was the record for anyday I have driven. 6 DPS (5 had people stopped) and 1 Brazos County Constable (had someone stopped). Can you say $$$$$$, JUST SLOW DOWN, and Stay alive !!!!!!

Trust me, LEOs do not enjoy making stops on that stretch of road. If it were about money, there are a lot easier and safer places to hammer speeders. They are taking their lives in their hands every time they step out of their car on that stretch of road. There is little to no place to safely conduct a stop. I cringe for them every time I see them out. By the way ....... MOVE OVER and slow down when you pass.

IIRC, that's a law now. when passing a traffic stop or emergency vehicle on the side of the road, all drivers must move over or drop their speed 20mph less than the posted speed limit.

I have driven down that strech so many times and each time have never seen any construction workers and if there are any, they are not anywhere close to the road.

Also I don't know about anyone else but going 55 instead of 70 does not make me a safer driver. I can drive 80 and still drive safely.
FortySomethingAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It has nothing to do with the construction workers. That stretch of road has been deadly for many years. 55 MPH is well justified until the freeway is completed.
TexasAggie008
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
No, it isn't justified....Do some math...how much ticket revenue do they get if they keep it 55 for a while? How much would they get if it was a reasonable speed like 65 or 70 during that same time span?

And there you have it...the main reason it is 55 mph. Some of you honestly think that money has NOTHING to do with tickets and that it is all about safety...complete bs...
FortySomethingAg

You are mistaken. It has everything to do with saving lives in this case.

If you don't wanna drive 55, then take Wellborn Road all the way down.

Haul butt all you want until you hit Hwy 6...or crash your ride.

Answer me this - How many people died when the ~10 miles stretch of construction zone was 70mph? OK, now, how about after they changed it to 55mph?

What are the numbers on the amount that have died on this stretch of road?

To me this is like having to add lights to 2818 because of the accidents. I personally never thought HWY 6 was dangerous or 2818. I'm all for safety and not for people dying, but don't punish the rest of us because people made bad decisions.
