I know there are no fishing signs, but I drove by there yesterday, and 2 guys were fishing. I stopped and asked them if it was "technically" ok to fish there. They said they'd called someone in charge, and had been told it's "ok" as long as you throw them back.

I've seen similar posting of it being "ok", and that the worst that they'd do to you is ask you to leave.

Is it "ok" to fish there?

There are some ponds that dont have signs, but I dont like fishing there just because there are too many people and dogs there. A couple of years back, my brother accidentally hooked our lab after he chased a topwater. I would never want that to happen to a dog again, so I am real careful of fishing around dogs. Also, there are a lot of turtles there. Try George Bush library instead.

I used to fish there all the time last summer but was asked by the fuzz to leave twice. The second time they actually had on file that I had already been warned and threatened me with a ticket. Something about medical waste and accidentally catching some specialized grass carp they have in all of those tanks.

I've fished small ponds like that too, Golfer. It's still fun to catch them, but damn, you'd think they'd learn.

Probably all the agri-chmicals in the water they use to keep algae and bacteria growth under control... they don't want some fool actually eating the fish they catch and getting sick..

I don't care about eating them...I just wanna catch them...

There are some HUGE snakes in those ponds as well.

Pres Bush fishes at his library. He asked the dean of the Bush School to keep kids away from his pond (which I believe he keeps stocked).

That is not true at all. I have been fishing there about 2-3 times a week for the last 4 months. Not once has anyone said anything to me other than "Catch anything?".

You don't want to fish in research park. It is ok to fish at the Bush Library, as long as you use barbless hooks.

I've met president Bush at the pond before...he asked if they were biting then we chatted about the fishing in the pond...

i know its not really fishing related, however it is research park ponds related.

i threw a golf disk in the on the 18th hole, it was my favorite driver so i stripped down to shorts and jumped in. the campus cop drove by and told me to get out of the water (i can fully understand their sense of liability here)

but here is the funny part:
he told me the reason i didnt want to be in there was that there were "bad things in the water that could get you and also it is down stream from the research facility"

i didnt want a ticket so i got out and held in the laughter until later.

first off, i would like to know what these "bad things" are. Nessie, giant squid, freshwater clams the size of buicks come to mind but something makes me highly doubt that 4 foot deep mud hole can sustain such animals. if he meant fish, turtles, and snakes, give me a break.

second, if the water downstream from the research facility is so bad that i must fear simple absorbsion into my skin then there are much bigger issues then me wanting my good driver out of the water. maybe tceq would like a phone call.

now i know he was probably just saying garbage hoping he was talking to an ignorant, but it didnt work.

just thought i would share.

"...bad things in the water that could get you..." makes me laugh everytime i say it.

I'd assume that one is on private land...

much like the pond by Bryan Municipal (which has LOTS of bass)...why not make them 100% catch and release.

As a toxicologist, if there's bass in there, there's nothing that would be harmful to you just by catching and releasing a few fish.

That lake is filled with arsenic. Pretty sure that could be bad for you.
Houston_Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Granted, it's not like drinking the water or eating the fish, but Arsenic can be taken in through contact with the skin. So if there's arsenic in the water, the fish are in it, you touch the fish to release it, there's a risk there.

And I agree about research park. If it's so dangerous that they don't want you fishing in it, then they shouldn't allow dogs to swim there and should close the entire area. Wonder how much the TNRCC and EPA know about the area?
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ummm....it's bound to sediments in the bottom of the lake...

if it was bad enough to be harmful to you just by touching the fish or water...there wouldn't be fish in there...that's biomonitoring...
Houston_Ag

And as we all know, bass never eat worms, shad or perch near the bottom of the lake, especially worms and perch who eat plankton and other organisms that feed on the sediment.

point is, if it was toxic to us just from touching the fish, the Bass (and really, particularly the bass in that ecosystem) would be DEAD....

Pretty sure the city is still trying limit liability b/c idiots exist everywhere and someone would eat one and get sick.
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I can understand the city and why there is no fishing and swimming alive, but as a toxicologist I question how dangerous simply touching fish would be if bass thrive in the lake, as it would be much more toxic to them, and particularly to them since they are at the top of the food chain there...

Arsenic bound to sediment has limited bioavailability.

I certainly see the need for more (and decent) public bass fishing from the bank in the area, but all things being equal, I'd prefer not to fish in a place that has a known toxic contamination.
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree with ya there...fisherman in me says if there's bass there, particularly if you watch about a 1/4 acre come up schooling after a round of golf, that i want to fish it though...

No **** though, I've seen about a 1/10 of the pound be solid surfacing fish...I've never seen a school that big in a pond/lake so small...

I used to catch and release nice bass out of the last tank in the Research Park chain. Fish Texas rigged plastic worms in the shade of the bridge or near any structure (including the concrete "bulkheads" ) you can find.

Bryan Municipal pond brings back some good memories. We fished it pretty regularly and used to C&R good numbers of good sized fish. Try along the dam, reeds, and pads with spinnerbaits and plastic worms. Topwaters at night get crushed.

Really? When I was doing my interview conference at the Bush School, that's what the dean told me. Maybe he said don't take throw back.

Back in the 90's a friend of mine came home with 2 or 3 dozen very nice cats. When we inquired he made some cryptic remark about private TAMU catfish ponds. Anyone else ever heard of them?

Mystical catfish ponds...

There are a few ponds on Riverside campus where they use to hold canoe classes. These ponds are full of catfish. I didn't tell you this, and if you get caught, you don't know me!
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
there's no secret on this one, but they stock both the ponds in Central park with about 100 and 200 12+ inch channel cats in the small and large ponds, respectively, every other thursday all summer long.

Thurs, fri, and sat after a stocking, and you can mop up. You're allowed to keep five, and i usually either give them to others or release them in front of everyone to be an *******-it just depends on what mood I'm in (jk, I mainly release them for others to enjoy/me to catch again later)

I went to George Bush on Saturday with minnows and tore them up. Between my buddy and I, we caught probably 30+ fish. I caught a huge, at least a pound, sunfish. Also caught a real nice 4 lb bass, biggest one I have ever seen anyone catch in there. Yall should try minnows there, youll mop up!

btw...if you've been out there 2-3 times a week the last 4 months, you've had to have seen me out there...

I'm the guy using left handed retrieve baitcasting stuff....
