Anyone have any experience with Patriot Safes? They look good, seem to be priced well etc... I'm looking into getting one in the next month or so and wanted some input.

I have a Kingsbury made by an Aggie in Crystal City, Texas named Kingsbury. I picked it up myself in 1990. I love it.

They look and sound good, I just can't get an independant opinion on one. Also how the heck did you guys get your safe into the house without jacking anything up?

I cut a bunch of 1" dowells to length. Tilt it to get three or four under it. I can run mine around the house by myself on the hardwood floors by replacing at the front side. If you have carpet you are on your own.

You should have been around when they were building pyramids. You might have been considered an engineering God!

I use an appliance dolly with a secure strap. What you use to move refrigerators.

Most safe have doors that come off easily. I say easily ... they just lift off. The lift part is not the easy part.

Most have powder coated shells, so they slide pretty well on carpet. That's how I get around corners.

I would guess mine is approx 600 lbs. Probably 400-450 without the door.

I did see cards set out at I think BassPro for safe movers. Cabela's quit doing it, at least in Ft Worth.

I would say any safe would stop 99.99% of the thiefs. A thief that knows how to crack a safe isn't going to waste his time breaking into my house.

I would focus on user features. Also fireworthiness, if you are looking at those kind. You might call your insurance agent. They may have info on them.

I had mine delivered. Guys had a fancy electric dolly and used golf balls on the carpet to get it into the corner.

One gun safe salesman told me to watch out for the design of the multi-bolt locks. I don't remember how but he said that on many of them, once you break one part of the lock, then all of the bolts are free too, so seven lugs is no better than two in this case. Maybe the theif would have to know what he is doing here.

Also, if you can, keep a cheap gun safe visible with your old .22 and an old shotgun and keep the good safe in a separate room.

Mine is made by Liberty Safe Co. Others may have this feature. It allows access in the back to run electrical for the internal dehumidifier. Very cool.

1. Google is you friend. Many people have done this before and posted pics.
2. Remember any home plans that are filed with government entities are searchable. Plus a lot of people come into a house while it is under construction and these are not all people you want to know where you keep your valuables.

So I would make sure plans on file with relevant governmental agencies show an "oversized closet" etc. and use DIY skills to drywall off most of it and build a hidden door yourself so no one but you and your family know what you have done.
