I saw it for the first time this weekend. Limits of big trout and keeper reds off the jettys.

The lemon rig--old as the hills. Or at least as old as ReaLemon lemon juice containers.

A classic method and still catches lots of fish.

Details on the lemon rig? I've never heard of it. Pics would help.

[edit]apparently there is something offensive in the image url though I can't imagine what it is. Anyway, check the link in the url I referenced.

That's one variation, particularly useful for fishing around the jetties, or where you want bait suspended in the middle of a deep water column.

Much more common is to rig like a popping cork. You remove the cap from the lemon, wrap your line around (above the leader), and then screw the cap back on.

That's the one, Ag83.

I don't think it's that important, TH. The ones I saw were the fist sized ones.

I just didn't if we were talking that size, or quarts or something.

What's the benefit of that over a popping cork?

It's more bouyant, I guess, than a normal popping cork. You can make the same rig with anything that floats of course...

I can see that, but what does more buoyancy buy me? I've never had an issue using popping corks provided the bait is at the proper depth. All a lemon botttle will do is raise the bait a hair in depth but that's easy enough to do with the cork.

Agreed. Not sure why, really. Maybe it is easy to see? Maybe someone was making mixed drinks on their boat, or had a fish fry the night before, and thought..."hey, save that lemon bottle for later...."

I looks like it may be easier to cast than a popping cork rigged 6' deep or so.

Yeah, I think that's the whole point of it. I was assuming EVA was talking about a popping cork rigged 2'-3' down. I wouldn't even think to try to rig one 6' down.

using the lemon and the 3-way swivel gives you a 6 foot floating depth for your bait with two 3 foot lines to cast, instead of one 6-foot length of line to cast with an in-line cork.

That's the advantage of the 3-way.

The nice thing about the lemon versus a cork is that you can fill the lemon half-full of water and still get good buoyancy. But the weight of the water gives you better ability to cast (for distance or into a wind).

"That's the advantage of the 3-way"

Actually, the advantage is I don't have to talk if I don't want to!

I just searched for 'lemon-rig' and it showed me how to make a bong out of a lemon. Interesting!!
