Another question guys.

I have a 270 WSM. Do you think they are too close in terms of caliber to justify another gun? Both whitetail guns, in my opinion.

I have both, but I wouldn't quite say that that you should really justify having both, unless you just like guns and collect them. I do, so it was an easy decision. They are both great loads. I think the .257 wby outperforms the .270 wsm, but not enough that whatever I shoot isn't going to die just as easily with either one(out to 300 yards). I will not shoot at any big game animal farther out than that.(except hogs)

I debated buying a .257 Wby Mag recently. There are two reasons I didn't do it. First, the .270WSM is probabably all you will ever need and you can get loads from 130-150 grains. The .257, however, is limited to t100, 115, and 120 grain loads under the Weatherby brand. They are made by Norma and run about $60 a box. That is pretty pricey. That said, the round flat hauls AZZ. Nevertheless, I can hit anything I want out to 400 yds with the .270WSM.

I also STRONGLY considered the .257 Wby, but went with a Weatherby .270 WSM for the same reason above. You can't go wrong w/ either.

Don't limit the 270 WSM to only Whitetails! Alot of Elk have fallen to that round - and in their tracks!

HAH!

There've been many an elephant fall in their tracks to a well placed .257 round!

I'm just saying that there's no comparison between what the two calibers are capable of!
A 270 is a much more veratile caliber than any 25 caliber as far as what you can hunt comfortably an humanely.

The bottom line is: Do you want the 257 Wby?
If so, then buy it and shoot it!

Anything I'd be comfortable hunting with a .270 WSM, I'd be comfortable hunting with a .257 Wby. There's really not that much practical difference.

I'd suggest the "fairer" comparison would be b/t the .270 WSM and the .270 Wby, but it's just another hair splitting game like the first proposition.
