I use several different ones, depending on where I'm hunting, or sometimes depending on which ones I have good corks for. For me it's either a Betts, Rich-n-Tone, Big Guy's Best, or a Fowl Language. They're all single reed acrylics. I have a million other calls, but these are the only duck calls I really use, and it's usually the Big Buy's Best, or Betts here lately.
Faulks. I've tried the $100 brands and haven't been all that enamored with them. I've had a couple of Faulk's single reed wood calls for about 15 years now and they have never failed me. 4 calls cost me about $60 total.
I also have a Haydells on my lanyard as a backup, but have only used it sparingly. Sometimes it's because I had to grab the first one my fist came around, a few other times just to make sure it still actually worked.
Yentzen - produced by a lifelong duck hunter and 1959 National Champion. Single, double, triple reed availble. Single and double are my choice. Also be sure to get a pintail whistle. It works on a varity of ducks { pintail,widgen,teal,etc.}
On my lanyard right now are 1. Sure-Shot Pintail Whistle 2. Haydel's DR-85 3. Duck Commander Brown Sugar 4. Duck Commander Camo-Max
I picked up the Duck Commander's for $3 a piece at Wal-Mart last week and am just trying them out see how I like them. I also have a woodduck call, snow goose call, and Canada call I rotate in depending on the situation
I use 4 different calls that I really like a lot. RNT Original acrylic, Cutt Down short, Echo Cocobola timber (my favorite call), and one made by a dude names Lance Lovett (sp) that is the only doulbe reed I own but it sounds fantastic.
I have 3 different different syle whistles for Widgeon, Pintail and Teal. I have a Holt PS2. I just bought and really like the new flextone double reed mallard. I can take it down to a softer rasp pretty easily. I also have a Duck Commander double reed for gadwalls. My fav is an acrylic RNT. Expensvie, but in the timber that loud SOB can bring em down. I just dont get to use it much anymore. We have a shortage of timber and cypress stands here.
Double reed = a call that has two pieces of plastic (reeds) inside that vibrate as air passes over and through them Single reed = a call with only one piece (reed)
Double reeds tend to be a bit easier to blow and can produce a softer "quack" if you will
Single reeds tend to be much louder but are also subject to the hated squeal which is not a good thing
Most beginners would be happier with the results produced from a double reed call
BTW - my lanyard contains an old cut down OLT D-2, a cut down Duck Commander, a Haydel Speckledbelly Goose call and a Haydel pintail whistle,
