I've seen on here before where people say the WSM's have less recoil with more energy @ impact.

After looking up the recoil energy I am finding that the .270 WSM is actually greater than the .270 WIN with a 8 lb gun and 150 grain bullets. The WSM recoil energy is 18.9 compared to 17 with the .270 WIN.

Is this right?

If you can feel a difference of 1.9 ft-lbs of energy, you're a better man than I am. Now if we are talking the difference between a .270 Winchester and a .338 Winchester Magnum (33.1 ft-lbs).....

I'll assume you were looking at this link:

Yes, this b@stard will kick the snot out of you. It bruises collarbones as well.

Man, to tell you the truth, I am very impressed with my .270wsm, and the kick is nothing. Maybe I am crazy, but mine does not seem as bad as some .270's I have fired in the past. But then again, I would say the same about a .300, so maybe I am not the man to ask.

I just thought it was interesting because everyone on here seemed to think that the WSM's kicked less and the really don't.

It probably depends a lot more on the mass of the rifle than anything else. If you have a heavy barrel and rifle, it will take out more of the kick by it's own inertia. It will accelerate into your shoulder slower, but travel further as well before your body stops it.

Recoil is a calculation MV=mv....Mass of the rifle and recoil velocity = and mass of bullet & velocity.

Identical weight rifles with the same cartridge will give you a different "Felt Recoil" due to fit, padding & position.

Look at the reloading data. You are loading as much a 15 gr. more powder in a WSM than a standard 270 Win. Sure you're going to have more recoil.

Just for comparisons sakes, what is the equivalent recoil for a 12 gauge shotgun?

For light loads it is going to be around 20ftlbs which is going to be in the .270 range If you are shooting a heavy load 3" it's going to be up around 50ftlbs which puts a 12 gauge up above a .300 ultra mag. Wide range.

I submit to you that my 3.5" 12 ga super mags with 2.25 oz shot thru an 870 is a lot of recoil. I don't know the number, but it hurts at the patterning board.

If you didn't have the built in recoil reducers on shotguns like a Black Eagle you would have a hard time enjoying hunting with one.
