Planning on spot lighting some wild pigs--my question:
Some animals can't see a red spot light, can the pigs see it or not?

I don't know if they can see the red light or not. But over the years, I have shot a few piggies while coon hunting with a red light. They did not seem to mind the light being on them.

I know several people that use red light when hunting pigs because they can't see that part of the spectrum

My inside sources tell me that they don't seem to mind the red light in the sense that, they won't take off runnning like they often do with a regular white light. But, even if you hit them with red they will still try to back out of the beam, just not scurry off.

Heh. If pigs can't see red, they will see a grey instead. So they can see the light, but not as intensely as white light. I think pigs can see in color though, its just that red light doesn't appear as intense to them, just the same as for us humans.

I had no clue Ms. Piggy had a rack.
News to me, disturbing, but still news.

I am not sure. But the old timers would say that pigs could see the wind.

I'd hit it. Gives a whole new meaning to the term "hogging".

I had always heard that if an animal's eyes reflect light at night (glow) that they see in reduced colors. Basically the tradeoff God made was if they see at night, they must live in a semi-monochrome world. I have no idea if that is correct, but it makes some sense. Based on that, I would suspect that pigs don't see red. That said, if you spotlight any animal directly with any color light - they seem to notice it. Which is why we always used the spot above the animal rather than directly at it.

Pigs see a pretty wide spectrum of color, but as mentioned previously, they have sharper night vision than we do. Humans have pretty complicated nerve inhibitor responses that allow for differentiation of color boundaries (but not so much for differences in shadowing as it relates to light--ability to see at night). Most computer models of "what a pig sees" show them seeing colors associated with objects, but not really seeing defined boundaries, especially when they are similar in nature (ex.--yellow, orange red).
