What do yall think about this rifle? I've been looking at them for a couple months and I'm thinking about pulling the triger on a 300 Win Mag. Opinions?

Consensus between hardcore rifle accuracy nuts is that they suck. Take a look over at accuratereloading.com to see some opinions. Besides custom rifles, you've got your Remington, Winchester, Weatherby, Kimber, Sako, Tikka, Ruger, Savage, Howa, etc. lovers, but the consensus is that the Browning rifles are pretty bad in the accuracy department. The Medallions are beautiful rifles though.

What's their definition of "bad in the accuracy department"?

I have heard that their BARs are a little loose, but nothing about the A Bolt.

I'm not real big on the Medallions, but I have an A-Bolt stainless synthetic in .223 with BOSS which at it's worst is .5 MOA at 100 yards and an A-Bolt synthetic Stalker in .300 winmag with BOSS and it is sub MOA also. Maybe it's the addition of the BOSS, but both of mine are very accurate rifles.

I can't really define "bad in the accuracy department." It just seems to be a common theme that I've noticed in my forays over there. Just parroting what I have seen, which is why I posted the link in case there was an interest in checking it out further.

I have one (30-06) with no BOSS and I can put three on a quarter at 100.

It's plenty accurate for my purposes.

Here's a link to Chuck Hawk's review. I like him because he's usually pretty fair in his reviews. He doesn't say anything about accuracy problems with the rifle.

I have a BAR Safari in .30-06. I've had some trigger work done, and I realize it's not as accurate as a custom bolt action, but it's plenty accurate for the types of shots I take.

Keep in mind that you probably don't need sniper-grade accuracy. As long as you can hit the lung/heart area at under 200 yards you should be fine. That doesn't mean you should buy a crappy gun, but it does mean that you don't NEED to shoot MOA. It's nice, but usually not necessary. At least not for hunters.

Thanks all, Log I read all through that BBS and didn't find much at all about Browning.

Interesting bit of info I did find, FN is going to move Winchester under their Browning division and we might get to see the M70, M94, and M88 made by the Japanese manufacturer that makes the non Safari BAR, BLR, A-Bolt and others. The predominant opinion is that we will be able to get high quality Winchester product.

The info I was referring to may be older, since I spent alot of time on there last year searching through old threads researching different brands and models, since I was shopping for a new rifle. I kept noticing comments regarding accuracy issues popping up, along with trigger adjustment issues, which is why I steered away from the Brownings. That being said, alot of people love them and get excellent accuracy from them, so it may have just been a bad batch or a number of people that were posting that were extremely anal. YMMV.

Log, you're absolutely right about the trigger. I have heard the pull is a little heavy, but that your local gunsmith can adjust it fairly easily. I'm still thinking about it, because I would really like a new 1911 and I'm not going to get both in the same year. I also prefer old pre-Garcia Sako rifles, but they are hard to find now days.

AgDog,
That is right about the triggers. My dealer adjusted both of mine to 2.5 lbs in a few minutes after purchase. They are a very nice trigger once adjusted to your liking.

Do you like yours str8shot1000? I'm thinking 7mm or 300 WM.

I've been very pleased with mine. The 300 Winmag shoots realy well and the BOSS has a pretty good brake with it. Recoil isn't bad at all. Mine is all black, synthetic with a powder coat finish so it's a pretty good inclimate weather gun.. Like I said earlier, it shoots just under MOA ao it is pretty accurate. I run handloads through it, and it did take quite a bit of shoot and adjust to get the setting tuned to the bullet. Once you find the sweet spot though, it will shoot.

Good guns, don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Longest kill shot I've ever taken was with a Browning (635 yards). A lot of the "accuracy talk" prodcues a floor covered in split hairs. Unless you are going to be a competition shooter, you'll have yourself a gun you can trust in the field for years to come!
