I live in Austin, and have hunted dove in the Brownwood/Comanche area the past several years. The last year or two, has really stunk....hardly any dove flying.

I tried some local land, but haven't had any luck either.

Does anyone know of a day lease(s) that might have some good dove this year......hopefully not too far of a drive from Austin?

If you can time your hunt to coincide with a front moving through it might help some. And of course make sure you have the usual sunflowers, milo, sorghum, water, etc to help your chances in wherever you decide to go.

I'd invite you to hunt with me (Comanche area), but you I guess you already know the only thing to shoot around there is alcohol. I did manage to limit out openning day last year by walking through the woods for about 4 hours. I managed to kill a whole one more bird the entire remainder of the season.

It's cyclical. Im sure eventually I'll end up back in that area again....but the past couple years, it's really dried up in your area. Maybe I'll take you up on the invitation in a few years!

Comanche Co. has been really spotty the last several years. Where there are birds, they are usually gone after the 2nd week of the season. As stated earlier, grain and water are key to attract and hold them.

The last good hunt I remember was 7 years ago. About 15 guys took about 200 birds openning weekend. It has gotten progressively worse every year since.

Ag-

You familiar with a guy named Dave Davis? He organized day hunts out of Brownwood each year. Everyone would meet at the Section Hand, and head out (sometimes out to Comanche).

He's dissapeared, and everyone I talk to, alludes to a bad situation that happened, and that he pissed off the town....but that's all I get.

You know the story by any chance?

Nope, sorry. My ranch is east of Comanche, so I don't really ever venture towards Brownwood. I usually frequent Hamilton and/or Hico when I need food/supplies. I hit up Comanche about once a year for some reason or another.

I've hunted the last 3 years around Devine and Lytle. We've usually been south or southwest of San Antonio. I cant remember the name of the people we went out with last year. It was called dove heaven or something of that nature. I have shot my limit every time i've gone down there. I could not believe how many birds there were considering every city slicker from Houston or DFW was down there blastin away. If you didnt kill your limit opening weekend then you just couldnt shoot AT ALL.

I was in Abilene last year and the skies were flooded with them. I have yet to knock down a eurasian dove, but there were plenty of mournings interspersed by the occassional whitewing.

Tom Stephenson usually puts together some good hunts. His packages include nice accomodations and good chow. He hunts in the Brownwood/Brady area.

Having family land in Santa Anna (Coleman County), and Fredericksburg (Gillespie county), both places have stunk as far as dove goes the last several seasons.

The deer last year in Gillespie were very poor also, lack of water, and food, some were small dogs, and was very evident towards the end of the season that alot would starve to death before the next hunting season.

Just hope conditions change soon, but I am not confident it will.
