$22,000 per mile reasonable?

I know a guy who paid $10K/mile, but this was at least 10 years ago. $22K seems high, but I could be wrong. I also know the guy who paid $10K spares no expense on his ranch.

$4/ft seems very reasonable to me. I just paid $2.20/ft for an all steal seven strand barbedwire fence and thought I got a pretty good deal.

I think there was an answer on the "things we do for deer" thread.

The price of galvanized wire is through the roof these days. A single roll of 12 guage 2-point wire is close to $60.

That high game fence is a lot less expensive than I would have guessed. It probably depends a bunch on the terrain. We have deep sand and had to put all our posts 7' into the ground.

In Comanche Co. it runs about 12K per mile.

A couple of months ago, 8 foot, graduated Staytite wire was about $360 for a 320 foot roll. Less than two years ago, it was about $240 a roll. You can save a few bucks by splicing graduated 4 foot net wire. For a perimeter fence, this works just fine.

We are building as we speak. Labor is running about $3800 (this is probably on the cheap side, but there is a bunch of competition in the S Tex area), Wire, t-posts(10ft), one strand of predator wire for top, runs about $10500 (from D&D in Seguin). Figure about $800 for concrete, and then there is your pipe for corners/braces. I am using all 2-7/8. You can shop pipe, but figure about 1200 ft per mile. This depends on how you want braces,, etc built, how many gates, etc. Current market on 2-7/8 is about $ 1.70/ft You might want larger pipe for the braces, gate posts etc. Larger=more $. Probably could get by with 2" line pipe. Another expense to factor would be fenceline preparation. Dozers and maintainers also command a nice sum these days.

Let me know if you need any additional info. ANY fence is an investment these days, but aint much cheap now.

Another issue is the type of wire. A lot of people are going to this solid 8 ft tightlock type wire. Using my low bidder price, the 8 ft solid runs about $1500/mile higher than the 2-47 in pieces run. Couldnt justify the additional expense when my builder charges the same using either type.

Hecubus I'm sure you're aware but I don't think that type of high fence is "game-proof" deer love to go under and through fences

I don't know though maybe y'all did it differently or put the strands closely together toward the bottom

I misinformed you guys. My material, concrete costs were for 2 mi, so cut those figures in half.

Sorry, old Ag=brain cramp.

That's just a cow fence. I was guessing a deer fence would be about twice the price. I was wrong.

By the way, deer do not seem to be able to go under or through that fence without breaking wires. I have one spot where twenty or so pass everyday and I'm going to have to remove the top wire and two middle wires or patch those wires every time I go by the fence.

Comparing a 2-part 1047 fence with a 8-foot Tightlock fence is an apples to oranges comparison. The advantages that Class III galvanization and high tensile wire provide in the Tightlock fence are worth the money. Also, the additional strength of the Tightlock fence allows you to use fewer T-Posts in the construction.

Of course, both fences do a good job of keeping your game in, but in South Texas you also want to try to keep the Undocumented Workers out of your ranch. The flexible low-carbon wire in a 2-part 1047 fence can be bent to allow for an easy climb for Guest Workers.

Spend the extra money for the Tightlock 8' Game Fence and you will not regret it.

Last time we looked into pricing the numbers come out just about even with what BrushCountry said and that was in central Texas so I'm sure the labor costs would be a bit higher.

So, $4.17/ft is not out of line if it includes clearing the old fence/brush and a few bends and gates in the fence. I think we are going to end up paying about $0.55/ft for the removal of our old fence/brush by the time we are done burning and burying the remnants.

I think the real question you should ask yourself is "Is there such a thing as a "good" high fence? Sorry...couldn't resist!

First of all, there is NOT a fence that keep the illegals from crossing. They climb the tight lock just like anything else you put up, and most of them are now carrying fence cutters....so, that argument is out the window. I am using high tensile, class III 1047, so your sales pitch is now shot !! A couple of neighbors have the 8ft tightlock, and the wire is pulled down where the crossings are--lots of ranchers are finding their fences cut--guess they need that for the women travelling along, buts thats another subject. Other than aesthetics, I see very little advantage. Keep your fences sprayed, and they all will last 50 years--at least in S Texas.

Yikes, I didn't mean to hit a nerve Brush Country. I never said that there was a fence to keep the wets out. I said a low carbon fence makes it easier for them to climb. You also didn't mention you were using the Class III 1047 product. That is a good product as well.

Once again, sorry if I hit a nerve.

Too much of a fossil for nerves !! Just want to make sure everyone knows all of the products available in case they might want to bid the material.

I think in Menard County going rate is 12k-14k per mile.

And that was with the best wire available.

Well, it's looking like my initial estimate was pretty far off.

I was told it prolly would be, as they have little faith in my estimating abilities.

I just paid $12k per mile in Live Oak county, not including dozer work.
