There's a course in Lancaster (south of Dallas)that is great for the price. I think it is Country View Golf Course. It's a nice course- lots of elevation changes make it tough.

In no particular order:

- Iron Horse in North Richland Hills.
- Chase Oaks Blackjack Course in Plano.
- Buffalo Creek in Rockwall/Heath.
- Sherrill Park in Richardson.
- Firewheel in Garland.
- Oak Hollow in McKinney (it's a goat ranch, but play here if you're 1. short on cash and 2. need a few low rounds to help out your handicap)

I just moved to Fort Worth, and I've yet to try out any of the munis/public fee courses here (other than Iron Horse, which is solid). Any suggestions?

PHX, give Fossil Creek a try. Nice course with some good holes.

Most of my buddies are pretty cheap golfers so we generally stick to the muni courses.

Sherrill Park-Richardson
Firewheel-Garland
Ridgeview Ranch-Plano
Pecan Hollow-Plano
Brickyard-Ennis (or maybe Ferris)

Here is San Antonio:

Riverside is great old course but not REALLY nice.

Cedar Creek used to be a REALLY nice private course and is now a muni. Still VERY nice.

Olmos Basin is good if the wife is shopping at The Quarry and you can't afford/get on The Quarry Golf Course (which is run by an Aggie). Not really nice but a decent little course.

Willow Springs is located right next to the AT&T Center and is a VERY nice course.

Forgot about Pecan Hollow (the old Plano Muni.) I've played a LOT of golf there ...

In the late '80s, I played there with an Aggie football player who was home for Christmas, but for the life of me, I can't recall who.

Great out of the way courses....

Squaw Valley in Glen Rose... 2 great courses.
Legacy Ridge in Bonham

both have a cool links feel to them and usually are not crowded... which makes for good fun time

I worked at Sherrill Park in college, before the #1 course was redone. Both then and now, it's one of the best courses for the money in the metroplex.

The hank haney training course in frisco is real good, but only nine holes and about to move locations. Not the prettiest, but a great challenge.

Played Eagle Pointe a few weeks ago. Pretty good shape for winter. Greens were fast as hell though. Like putting on glass.

TPC at the Woodlands is no longer public - in fact, it's not even called that anymore I don't believe. But it was good.

Head and shoulders above the rest - Waterwood National.

The conditions have been hit or miss for the better part of the last 10 years, but the course design is among the best in the state - public or private. If it was an hour closer to Houston, it would be $100+ to play there and similar to Memorial Park when it comes to getting a tee time (ie - damned near impossible).

BTW - Falcon Point is private.

Waterwood is still one of my favorites. Played in 3 High School regionals there. A real challenge. I went back 7 years or so later and the place was very run down. I talked with some folks there and they said it was just purchased by a golf course management company and that they were going to turn it around. I hope so, what a great layout.

DANG...Unfortunatley, this has been the routine there for about the last 10 years or so. When I was at A&M (mid/late 90's) it was very run down and we could play there for less than $20 during the week. Then, someone bought it around 98 and it really improved a lot. They regrassed the entire course and the place showed real promise - for about a year, then conditions started to decline again. been a steady cycle of improvement and decline ever since. Very hit or miss - so much variation that I never want to take the chance anymore on the drive from Houston to play a course in poor condition.

I played Waterwood for the first time this past saturday and came away very impressed. There were a few patches of dry ground but overall the course was in great shape..beautiful layout and some of the best views I have seen for a Texas courese.

Canyon Springs in SA.

I think it was past 1604 on Blanco. It is the closest you will come to Barton Creek for half the price.
