Is there really a huge difference, within reason? Between say, mossy oak, hardwood hd, etc... Is it going to cost you a shot?

Not much between those two. More important than being camoed, in my opinion, is being still.

The military has recently created a new camo pattern that is actually different shades of blue and pixelated in pattern. I've got a buddy in the Special Forces and he gave me a pair of pants for Christmas. Worked very well for me during the 2nd split.

I can't speak for Texas, but in my experience bowhunting and turkey hunting 3D camo will improve your odds of not being busted.

I have a "leafy wear" suit that I wear bowhunting and turkey hunting.

IMO, you can deer rifle hunt in swimming trunks and floaty rings.

Wear decent camo and SIT STILL!

Cool. Just curious as I might be going on a turkey hunt in April and wanted to be semi prepared.

Also, for deer hunting with a bow, scent control is more important than camo.

I shower every morning before I go out with scent-free soap, and use scent free deoderant. Then I hunt the wind.

All the scentblocker/carbon stuff is a hoax.

As long as it does a good job of breaking up your outline it should be sufficient most of the time. That said every time I see a good looking new camo I immediately think "Oooo I need some of that!"

Master - I know exactly what you're saying.
However, what I found to be the best "all-around" pattern for West Texas, South Texas and the Hill Country is the "Outfitter" pattern in Cabelas. It is subtle in color and is in shades of grey, green and brown that blend in well in the aforementioned areas.

Here's what I use for bow and turkey.

Where something that will break up your outline. A leaf suit will work. Use scent block and keep quiet and still. I hunt mostly deer though not turkey.

I use cabelas brand leafy wear.

My turkey hunting buddy uses the same suit, and I've looked for him been unable to find him within 20 yards before.

Cabela's has these on sale, but the pants are only available in Hardwoods HD...

Link didn't work, but its their StormKloth stuff, and its on a pretty good sale.

Breaking up your outline is overrated in my opinion. Unless you're wearing a ghillie suit, you are still a recognizable man shape. Wearing a leafy suit doesn't help that much. I find sitting with my back to a bush, or tree does more to break up my outline than a leafy suit.

I like the Open Country stuff... good for South Texas mesquites...

Sometimes you Win. Sometimes you Lose. Sometimes it Rains.

Huh? That's pretty much the only point to wearing camo, isn't it?

I like this stuff. I have the gun wrap. Thinking about ordering more.

SR90, combine my leafy suit with some good ground cover and I can disappear.

I hunted in swimming trunks in Comanche County all season long last year.

Didn't need the floaty rings, though, 'cause it's been pretty dry.

Hope I need the floaty rings next season.

Brush Country is my camo of choice. Made in College Station and designed by an Aggie (I think). Can't go wrong there.

MossyOak, Realtree, etc are one in the same - they look great from two feet away, but from 10 yards or more you are a dark colored silhouette.

Check out Predator camo. It breaks up your outline like a champ. I have been out in the open and inside of 20 yards with deer, turkey, and a fox. Of course I was stone still, but in every instance the animals looked right "through" me.

Yeah, but would it really be as much fun?

Maybe, but when the Revolution comes, you'll be glad you bought it. (PS that's what I tell my wife about every gun/hunting/camping thing I buy)

So something is better than nothing, and sitting still is the key. Although buying more gear is fun no matter what!

Check out the quiet camo. the stuff really cuts down on the sound made when you move. stuff seems to attenuate a lot of high frequency noises. at least that was what saw when we used a mic and a spectrum analzer to test out the claims. i don't think they make it in a bathing suit.

I've got some Leafy-wear, and it helps a lot. You can get away with a little more movement, just move slowly when you do it. As for a camo pattern, even plaid would work, but I couldn't find any plaid Leafy-wear at Cabela's.

no, texas hunting is just sitting in a deer blind anyway

Whilst hunting with a centerfire rifle, the need for camo is way overrated. Khaki and flannel clad old timers killed tens of thousands of deer in their time without it--more importantly, without needing it.

But to big game hunt in Texas means you have to look cool and hip so you better wear something camo lest you get laughed off the lease.

Now bowhunting, dove hunting, turkey and waterfowl hunting are different stories. The more camo, the better. I'm amazed at the number of hunters who disregard the benefits of camo after opening weekend of dove season, sitting and wondering why the birds are flaring from them 40 yards out.

Although obviously an advertisement for predator camo, still a good read. I liked the hawaiian shirt example.

SA, several years ago, I guided a dove hunt and some moron wearing his "lucky" turquoise shirt actually started whining bacause he didn't get any birds. I think those 50 yds on either side in drab colors got limits.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I really like the new 3-D camo patterns, but washing your clothes in baking soda, showering with scent-away, and being still in a tree stand are the most important aspects of concealing yourself for deer. For hunting in a box blind, I bust out the blue jeans and t-shirts to great success.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm of the opinion that contrast is the key along with sitting still. If the general pattern blends in, you should be o.k..
SR90
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What I meant by breaking up your outline was confusing. I meant that adding shapes or leafy stuff to a camo suit doesn't seem to do much good in my opinion. To me it's more important to have camo where the pattern breaks up your shape. Make sense?
