Traveling to a jobsite yesterday and ate at a restaurant in Nederland. Went to take a leak and while at the urinal I noticed through the open stall door sitting on the toilet tank is a belly band with a pistol. No one else was in the restroom, so I wash my hands and give it some time but no one comes back inside. I go check out rig and the pistol and its a Glock 42. Can't just leave it there, so I decide to give it to the restaurant for safe keeping, but I don't want to hand some employee a loaded firearm so I go to remove the mag and clear the chamber.

No joke, the round at the top of the mag is in backwards! I didn't know that was possible. Mag had one round in backwards plus one more below it facing the more traditional direction. I'm looking for cameras figuring I just got pranked. Add the round in the chamber and ol' boy was rolling with the notoriously powerful armament of three .380 ACP FMJ rounds and only one of those would have fired. Figured later after remembering observations while we were eating, there was a very elderly group from the nursing home that was the likely source.

Top round being backward is how you make sure your gun doesn't kill someone you want to intimidate but you aren't totally confident enough to remove all the ammo. lol.

Yikes on the elderly people.

We received an email FOUR times last year that the security guard hired at my kid's elementary left their gun in the bathroom. Thankfully adults are not allowed to use bathrooms that the kids have access to, but still.

Idiots like that make it really hard to defend our rights, sometimes.

I have a buddy who took a dump at HEB once and set his gun down on the back of the toilet and left it. Luckily he remembered about 30 min later and was able to get it back.

A buddy of mine was told by a rental car company that they average finding about one gun a month.

Another bar/restaurant here in town found one in the bathroom as well. It happens.

If you take yours out to do your business, make sure you double check to reholster.

I'm shocked at how careless folks are. Even if you aren't worried about the risk of it getting into the wrong hands, surely folks are worried about losing hundreds of dollars worth of a tool? That's like 500 bucks or more down the drain if you lose it. I lost my 30 dollar Sog Power Pint and got all kinds of pissed off over it.

My dad had a county homicide detective that worked with him. They wore sport coats and shoulder holster rigs. He carried a semi auto and as most rigs like that he did not use the retaining strap.
They had gone to a restaurant to eat lunch and the detective needed to go poop.
As he finished up and stood up his keys fell on the floor and kinda went under the toilet.
As he bent over to find and get the keys his gun came out of his shoulder holster and fell in to you know where.
My dad said that they called him a dirty cop from then on.

Probably told this story here before, but we had a kid at work leave his in the bathroom. We had several people that regularly carried. Not allowed per company policy, but it was legal and our project team was cool with it. When it was found, the superintendent assumed it was mine. It was not, but I could tell who it belonged to. He got a stern "don't let it happen again" talking to. Fast forward a year or two and a different project and team, and he did it again. This time, it was found by the safety guy, who of course called corporate. Employee was fired.

Sounds like a business opportunity. Install those small bus-station like lockers in restrooms that take quarters and you get a key. Not just for firearms but phones, etc. I went into a stall the other day and the guy had left his phone in there. He quickly came back for it. If someone leaves their stuff in the locker by mistake, no worries. It will still be there when they come back in a day or a week.

Once, in Hobby, I found like 90+ bucks in cash and change along with a business card when I sat down. I got done, took all that stuff to wherever they could page people (don't know if they still do that -- this was early '90s) and waited on the guy. I figured if he didn't show or had already left on his flight I'd just call him, verify his info and send him a check. No sweat off my back. Anyway, he showed 20 minutes later. Was very appreciative, but it gave me something to do for almost a half hour.

Much to the chagrin of their parents, I taught my niece and nephew how to pick up a gun and clear it when they were about 8 or so. I started with a blue gun, taught them the proper way to pick it up, then we went to an unloaded (of course) Glock, H&K and finally a 1911.

Occasionally I will take DART into downtown Dallas.
One morning I was the only person on the platform, before dawn as I had some prep for a meeting that morning
I noticed a white box, walked over to it and found what was probably 150 of a 200 round box of 9mm
If that wasn't odd enough, on a metal bench on the platform, was a damned Uzi!
I skipped my early train and waited for the police to show up and take it. But, th cop on scene told me to take the box of ammo if I wanted it :-)
...take it easy on me, I'm a normal horn

About ten or so years ago I was out walking my dog in my neighborhood. About 5' from the curb under a tree in someone's yard I saw a black pistol laying in the grass. Occasionally we have some property crime on our neighborhood where cars will get broken into. My first thought was that some thug had ditched this out his window driving through our neighborhood. I could tell the neighbors weren't home so I called the non-emergency police line and reported it. Thinking it was perhaps evidence I didn't dare pick it up. I took a picture and then walked home.

When I got home I used Google image search to see what it was because I didn't recognize it at first. Then childhood memories came back when Google told me it was a Marksman pellet pistol. My cousins had one just like it in the 1970s. The neighbor's careless kids probably left it laying in the yard.

Buddy of mine lost his Glock once, but luckily it was at the deer lease. This was 4 or 5 years back. He was heading back to camp from the stand and nature called so bad he couldn't make it any further. Set his pistol on the hood of the buggy and ran into the woods to add more mud to the already insane amount of mud due to it having rained for about a month straight.

He finished up and jumped back in the buggy and headed in. Made it a few feet and realized he had messed up when he saw his gun slid off the buggy into the pit of despair of about a foot of water and another foot of mud. We looked for an hour or so with no luck. Took a metal detector the next day.

Point is, aside from this board, every now and again people make mistakes for any number of reasons. We all wish they didn't, but normal mortal humans do. I personally can't figure out how you'd not notice the weight of the gun after finishing things up, but I've done some really dumb sht over the years that goes way beyond forgetting my gun on the back of the crapper.

That is why my phone never gets used in the bathroom. Don't want to have to destroy it and replace.

I had a scare once when I stupidly set my pistol on my sunroof while loading a couple things into my car. I was a few miles away doing 70 on the freeway when I had the terrible realization of what I had done. I pulled over immediately with the intent to backtrack and hopefully find it in the road somewhere back near my house. Fortunately when I checked, it was actually still sitting on my sunroof. Never going that again.

Nice Idea, but if Im using a public restroom for #2, time is already at a premium and about the time that locker door shuts, the turtle cannot be squeezed back into the shell.
