Is there a free ranging herd of elk near Rock Springs or are these some escapees from a nearby exotic game ranch? Pretty cool to see either way.

They are some escapees from all the exotic ranches in the area….not really any established herds. Many of them are Red Deer/Elk crosses.
They typically don't last long free range in the hill country, as they are either trapped or killed pretty quickly.

Lot of large legacy ranches have been and continue to be bought by brokers in Edwards County. Then the ranch is subdivided, roads are cut, electricity is brought in and the subdivided tracks are sold. Nearly all owners of the subdivided tracks hunt their property to some degree. Naturally, some owners are conservation minded when it comes to harvesting game. Others tag out every year and so do their guests (brothers, cousins, uncles, etc.).

The land is priced accordingly.

Like anything in life, it's a crapshoot. One that I've done.

And the Tran-Pecos as well. It may be interesting to see what, if anything, TPWD does about classifying them as one of Texas' big game animals.

Sure, they were extirpated and have come back. But so were desert bighorn.

Are their known established herds in the Trans Pecos or the hill country now?

There are definitely free ranging herds in the Trans-Pecos region.

How large are these documented herds? Are they Elk, Elk/Red Deer cross, Elk/Sika cross? Who is gathering the data on these herd numbers? TPWD?

No clue on actual numbers, but plenty enough to see multiple wall hanger bulls & groups of cows south of Marathon standing in the barditch on 385 every time I drive down it at night in the fall.

Edit for Google search.

Roger that. It will be interesting to see what TPWD ever does on Elk.
They have always classified them as "alternative livestock"… just like Axis, Fallow, Red Deer, Sika, etc.
While at TAMU in one of my WFS courses I remember a grad student from Auburn's WFS working on research of native Elk in West Texas.
Lots of discussions on what exact species of Elk were indigenous to Texas …. Cervus Canadensis nelsoni (pure Rocky Mountain Elk) or Cervus Canadensis merriami (Merriams Elk) or a hybrid of the two.
Very few exotic ranches in Texas that had/have elk herds truly have pure Rocky Mountain Elk species. Most have some DNA of Red Deer in them.
Some ranches documented the pedigree of their herds many years ago to prove the pureness of Rocky Mountain Elk species they owned. I would guess that very few, if any, free ranging Elk in Texas are going to have retained the pure Rocky Mountain Elk bloodline.
In fact, it is hard to obtain an Elk in Texas today, and be assured that it doesn't have some Red Deer blood in it.
Only buying or obtaining Elk from the ranches that had the foresight to originally document and record the pedigree of their Elk herds initially can you be sure.
Missouri had a program to reintroduce Elk and build back a free ranging herd.

NW80 and I had a long talk about the elk in west Texas one time (Glass, Davis, Marathon, and elsewhere). I don't remember all of the details but it was very interesting/insightful and he is a guy that would know all about it. Hell, he shot a 400" bull out there and am pretty sure he grew up out there too.

But as you pointed out earlier, plenty of "mutts" running around the state elsewhere, especially in the hill country. We have elk, stag, and sika running around and have had elk on camera all the way back to 2011.

I also have a buddy with a 275 acre place in Rocksprings and they have transient elk there too - including probably a 310-315" bull this year. I was pretty shocked!

OP,

This looks like a really cool place and hope someone picks it up soon! Good luck

I was on a lease for 10 years near the Rocksprings airport. Plenty of elk out there. Multiple were killed on our large lease each year. I really miss hunting out there.

What's wrong with it?
That price makes no sense.

It is probably 10% under market value as it is listed. Thank you for your concern but there is NOTHING wrong with it. Everyone has different needs in life
