I used this site to determine which trees to plant based on what county you are in.. You can select your yard size, tree size, drops or keeps leaves, etc.

I planted a burr oak 13 years ago when i bought my house. It's about 15ft tall now. I planted a mexican white oak 7 years ago and it's taller than my two story house. It is a better looking tree than the burr oak.

Very unusual for a burr oak to stay that small. Where are you located? Does it receive any irrigation?
I have bur oaks in my neighborhood planted 20 years ago that are 45' tall.

I got a couple hybrid, Chinese chestnuts. I grew from seed this year. I have three hybrids in my yard; I tried to grow some of the seeds every year.

If anyone's interested, let me know. I can bring them next time I come to Texas.

Both my Burr's are 30 years plus however long it takes from acorn to 8' ish old. Both are 40 plus feet. I'll try to remember to take a picture tomorrow

Mexican sycamore does very well in Houston-as Apache mentioned, make sure it's true Mexican sycamore. Most American sycamore wind up with Hypoxylon eventually-then it's done for.

You can if you plant it close to your house or sidewalk or driveway. The roots can really mess stuff up. We were given a live oak as a housewarming present by a friend and it got huge. It had two huge limbs that hung out over the house and finally I feared one of them breaking and falling on the roof as well as what the roots were likely to do to our foundation. It had already lifted and broken two sidewalks.
