Brings back memories where dad would tell me and my brother to get the long cane pole and "break open the web worms". He never bothered spraying them from a distance when he had us.

Paper wasps and yellow jackets look very similar.

Paper wasps are the ones with the open honey comb looking nests and are more docile and super easy to kill with the wasp spray, especially in the AM.

Yellow jackets have a covered nest and one hole to go in or out. They can can build their nests in the ground or in a wall. They are far more aggressive and much harder to kill with the spray. Tying to kill them with spray can really piss them off and they will come looking for you.

I truly wish I did not know the difference.

Same using a long reach trackhoe. I was directing the operator on where the nest was and once he hit it those *******s chased after me and never even tried to get at the cab with him in it. Fortunately, I was able to jump in the truck before they got to me but they did not give up at all.

When I was a kid we would take a small board (a wooden roof shingle worked best) and stir up the wasps and swat them like a fly. Worked best with 2-3 people so you didn't have all of them coming at one person. Relatively high risk but fun until you got stung.

Last year while mowing the backyard I suddenly was stung several times and started running across yard only to get stung several more times. I fell down but quickly got up and made it to front driveway and still had one on the shoe. Very aggressive yellow jackets. Had to get exterminator to use pressure hose to gradually get close enough to stand over hole and fill it up. I looked a few days later and I could have dropped a baseball down that hole. I have lived in the same house for 43 years and never had them before. Much worse than wasp stings through the years.

This is the reason why you never shred fields or roads without a cab tractor. When you go over a hive of yellow jackets on the ground those things will come out madder than hell and try to get you. If you're not in a cab tractor be prepared to get roasted by them. We don't use non cab tractors anymore because of this. Been there done that and it isn't any fun.
