$5.99/lb, the marbling on the one I picked up looks great. No trimming required...BBQ time!

For the neophytes out there like me, how do you prepare a chuck roast like this for smoker/bbq?

This will be like a mini brisket, hopefully with that marbling, I expect the final product to be sort of a "brisket hybrid", not as lean as a brisket flat, but not as "moist" as a brisket point.
I will wrap in butcher paper, when the IT is about 170deg, then take it to 195-ish
I also will baste it with a (for me) traditional sop.

I'll go back for another (or two), hopefully larger.

I'll smoke for a couple of hours using any brisket rub, then throw in the slow cooker with a can of beef broth and an onion for 4-6 hours. Then shred, and use it for pulled beef sandwiches, tacos, or nachos. It's awesome and easy!

All above plus poor man's burnt ends. Chunk them, smoke, sauce. Very forgiving. About 5-6 hours total.

Good deal

I really like smoking chuck roasts when the go on sale. Smaller and faster than a brisket. Taste great. Those prime roasts should workout well. I'll probably go get a couple

Love smoked chuck roast. And I too prefer it shredded over sliced.

The prime chuck delivered, cooked at 250 deg over pecan and hickory, wrapped in pink paper at 170-ish, pulled at 195 deg IT.
The different muscles make slicing across the grain intermittent, but all was tender. And bonus burnt ends.

I have started doing these all the time. I know this will be ridiculed, but I like them better than brisket. Very similar flavor profile but much easier to cook and the perfect size for my family. I smoke mine 2 hours and then finish in a covered foil pan. If I want to slice it, I will do less time in the oven and if I want to do tacos, I will let it go until I can shred it.

I don't think you will be ridiculed at all. I agree for all the reasons you mentioned. It's also a great way to make cheap burnt ends. Buy two of them for less than $25 and turn one into bunt ends and let the other go like a regular brisket and you have a great Sunday afternoon meal with leftovers for the start of the week.
