We have a skunk that has taken up residence under the house (pier/beam). I have a trap used for armadillos that I plan to use for Mr. Le Pew.
What do I do once skunk is trapped to avoid getting sprayed as I move it away from house?
Read about using tarp or blankets to cover trap. Skunk will not spray if it cannot see me, true?

Please share experiences/tips so that I do not wind up in a vinegar/tomato juice bath.

You are going to get the typical OB solution of a thousand of ways to dispatch it…Ranging from drowning to shooting it with a Howitzer.
I have had success of throwing a heavy blanket over the trap by approaching it slowly. I've never been sprayed by doing it…. but….remember getting directly sprayed is what you want to prevent.
You might call an animal rescue for assistance.

We had one under our house that would let off a pooty smell off and on. I was not effective with trapping so my wife cranked up the Rolling Stones for several days which did the job.

I had one under my AC concrete pad. I called animal control at my small town. He did two things that I hadn't heard of. He used "vinegar bombs" (high dosing of vinegar in the den) to try to flush and keep the skunk out. That worked. He also uses baited PVC pipe traps. Skunks apparently are ok with going into somewhat tight spaces and the tube keeps them from raising their tails to spray and they also apparently get highly stressed in that type of trap.

Gunny you really missed the best option available. Send the neighbors dog in after it.

I've heard that cover works but never tried. Best of luck and get the rib to film from a safe upwind location

Just my experience....

We set a live trap and captured the skunk. Put a blanket over the live trap to calm the critter. Then disposed of it with a .22 to the head.

That said, we live out in the country on acreage.

That's what I did to get one out of a storage unit I was renting. Leaving a radio on all night did the trick. They don't like noisy areas

I wouldn't bet any money a skunk won't spray if they can't see you.

The blanket or tarp over them basically is for keeping the spray off of you. I have moved several over the years that way and only had one spray. It smelled like heck but it didn't get on me.

Throw some mothballs under the house. Had the same problem, mothballs solved it.

I cut out an old plastic trash can and covered the entire live trap except the bottom and the trap opening. I cut out a slot for the trap handle on the top. I baited trap with dry cat food.

It is interesting that skunks have different personalities. Some are very laid back and some are very high strung.

I didn't realize that a skunk can be facing you in a live trap and still hit you directly in the face. I then did a simple experiment…….I threw a 5-gallon bucket near the trap, and the skunk could hit it with spray every time. BTW, skunk spray smells different when it is covering your face.

Order some Fox urine from Amazon. (Yep, they sell everything) Take some rocks or old golf balls and tie them in some rags for weight. Tie fishing line or string to each one that is long enough to throw under the house or to where you need it. PUT ON SOME RUBBER GLOVES!!!! pour the fox urine on these and throw them where you need them. Usually with in 24 hrs the skunk is gone. use the strings to pull the rags back and toss in the trash bag. If there is a hole you can see, leave one in it and cover the hole up.

Co worker had the same issue, and didn't believe me that it would work. Came back from the weekend and she said that within 30 min, their camera picked up the skunk heading out down the street.
