What's the go to for killing this monster weed in flour beds, that would be safe for dogs to walk on? It's taken over bad this summer and tried pulling all I can but I need to spray now. Worried about what would be bad for the pup, but also effective. TIA

This great for weeds, but it will also kill the grasses you want to stick around...

Monument is the best thing available. Use a surfactant and be patient. Also look into freehand if you are just worried about your beds. Both of these products are expensive but they actually work. Freehand is a preemergent and monument is a post.

I've had very good luck with Image, and you can find it everywhere. The key is you have to water it in after spraying, because it works via root uptake. Most people forget that part, and then wonder why it didn't work as well as it should have.

Can you paint stem with remedy and diesel. Just happen to have it.

Certainty, or Sertay (generic form).

Sedge Hammer has never done anything for me - yellows it up a bit, but even after several treatments the sedge is still there. Certainty nukes it in 2 treatments, sometimes only 1. But once you get nutsedge, it's damn near impossible to get rid of outside of stripping the top 6" of topsoil and sifting it all out to get every single nut out of the ground. Even leaving 1 will screw you over in a short time frame.

I've had great results with Dismiss without harming my Bermuda

MSMA.

Sledge hammer (will usually take several applications over 4-5 weeks), but you will notice it getting weaker after the first application.

DO NOT PULL IT, you just make it stronger.

MSMA is not labeled for residential lawns anymore. Not saying it won't work on it, and if it's not on the label I won't recommend it, but if you just happen to have an old label, I'm guessing it would work. The only problem with MSMA is that it can be hard on bermudagrass at higher rates, and you shouldn't use it at all on St. Augustine.

If you dig down on the nutsedge you can see the "nut" and there are runners going from plant to plant. If you don't get the "nut" you are essentially just pruning it and it comes back stronger

I still use MSMA on my zyosia and i use it previously on my bermuda at my previous house. I know it is not for residential use now but it is the only thing I have found that will actually kill dallisgrass. It can still be used on golf courses and public parks so honestly how bad can it be to be used in your lawn twice a year? It is easy to obtain as well.

As far as the OP really no need for a selective herbicide in the flower bed. Round up type Home Depot brands are just not what they used to be. Got to go a higher concentration if you really want it to work.

MSMA works great for knocking out Bahia grass. It will yellow up bermuda some, but I've never had an issue with it killing it even when I stopped the tractor and forgot to turn the sprayer off - it burned a nice strip in the grass, but about a month later you couldn't tell where it happened.

I need something that will destroy crabgrass. I have a mess of it in my yard and so far nothing I've tried has actually worked.

Thanks everyone! I opted for the "pet safe" natural armor version first due to my GSP lizard hunting 24/7 in the flower beds. Will post an update here if it works.

I put this down a couple years ago when I had it thick one summer, kept repeating and have zero crabgrass now. It got thinner each year and finally is gone. Really helped the Johnson grass that my neighbor has a bunch of. My yard I am super happy with it's the stupid flower beds and rocks I have around my firepit that have gone crazy with the nutsedge. Tried a propane torch and just came back stronger…

Used sedge hammer two years ago on a pretty big patch of it in my backyard and I haven't seen it come back since. I applied probably more than I should have so it knocked the Bermuda back as well. The pictures are before and after with a month in between the two.
