Yep. I have an egg, and put in a decent sized piece of aged oak off to one side of the bowl. Best bark and flavor I've ever had since doing this. Those little chips/chunks just burn up almost instantly, and don't soak in water, as they'll steam the inside of the egg.

To me lump charcoal burns significantly hotter than regular briquettes. We cook lots of fajitas that are thin, so we cook hot and fast, I have never been able to get briquettes hot enough and always end up with an unpleasant rubbery texture. I grew up in South Texas where we had ready access to mesquite and nothing beats that but if I don't have access to it lump charcoal over briquettes every time. Just my opinion

All this. I use Kingsford briquettes in my Weber kettle for long and slow cooks because I get great bark and usually only have to reload it once with briquettes. Plus they burn more consistently. I use the Egg with lump for moderate (300-400 degrees) to high heat cooking.

Lump does burn much hotter than regular briquets.

I used to use HEB Central Market but have switched over to Jealous Devil. I had been ordering it through Amazon but can now grab it at Home Depot along with some Walmarts.

I like Jealous Devil mostly because it does seem to have bigger pieces and it doesn't spark as much. Had a bag of B&B recently and it sparked pretty bad.

At the end of the day, it's really personal preference like Ford, Dodge, or Chevy.

Heat wise they're not that much difference. It's piece size to me as I can get a few good cooks out of bigger pieces.

There are definitely different smoke profiles to lump as they're not pure perfect carbon. I don't think they're that noticeable though.

For real smoke you need real wood on top of the lump. I use chunks of mesquite and post oak I slice up with my mitre saw. It's worked really well for getting smoke.

I use jealous devil in my weber smokey mountian and kettle. Ive never found anything weird in the JD bags like you hear about sometimes finding in other brands. The lump charcoal burns hotter and gives a different flavor to the food imo.

I used to go out of my way and/or overspend to get good charcoal.

I eventually found good quality and good value as well as convenience with Jealous Devil at Home Depot

I use B&B and have had no issues in my Kamado Joe. Gets up to temp quickly, lasts a long time, and food comes out great. If anything some of the pieces are too big and I have to break them up a little bit.
