My dad's mom died when he was 9. He quit school at 11 and ran away from home, never saw his dad again, his dad died when he was fighting on Saipan. As you can imagine, his income was never great, he and my mom could not help with buying vehicles or with college costs.

I had two younger brothers. When I was in high school, he told me "I didn't give you boys much other than a good name. Only you can take that away."

As I was about to start 2 a days in 1976 as an eigth grader to play football for the first time, he told me, "When you get knocked down, get up and find somebody to hit." Following that advice made me an 87# middle linebacker for awhile. But I tried to follow it in all areas of my life and it also got me two degrees from Texas A&M University as the first person in my direct line to get a degree.

Pop had a similar one about getting into heated arguments with people'

"Don't start throwing poop with the poop birds cause you're gonna get a lot of poop back on you."

Except he didn't use the word poop

Always take out the biggest one first. The others will think twice.

When you have a questionable course of action or decision, ask yourself "could you explain it to your mother if she read about it in the newspaper?"
