I usually go out Port A jetties when weather cooperates but will have a place closer to packery and have never run it. I know it's much more shallow and the jetties are shorter leading to iffy conditions. Will be running a 21' bay boat that drafts about 11". Any tips heading out from there?

Be careful going out when there is an outgoing tide from the bay through the jetties. We had an oh **** moment once. If the seas are 3ft plus and the tide is ripping out those waves will stand up and drop right over the bow. If it's calm no worries. If it's a bit rough check the tides.

I know people that do it on calm days but even if it's 2's ...with a 22' I don't try and leave the bay through packery.

Yeah go check it out before and if there are breakers at the end it's no go. We went out about 3 weeks ago and that out going tide had the breakers up. We had to weave around and took one over the bow but kept on going and fished most of the day. Came in during slack tide and water was flat coming in. Was 2' 7s day but seemed a little higher than that.

I would avoid it this time of year. Spring winds have been kicking up like crazy. I can think of only a day or two were I would run a 21' boat out of Packery in the last couple of months. Too dangerous and not worth capsizing.

I lived down there for 7 years and took my 23ft Mowdy a total of 5 or 6 times out the cut. The days that were pleasant enough were few and far between. Now, my 42 Contender was a different story

The guide we used during Spring break runs / captains some of the bigger boats like Freeman's / Whalers out of packery- however, he told me he tried taking a bigger heavier fishing boat (like Viking ) and it hit bottom 2 times so he does not take bigger heavier fishing boats with V drivers out any more, they run down to Port A where it's much safer for a boat like that

For smaller boats the biggest issue is safety.. there was a video on Texags of some guys getting in serious trouble and flipping their smaller bay type fishing boat - be careful - If I remember correctly, it can get really dangerous when high south gulf winds run into an outgoing tide - huge waves
