One of my best friends and a veteran died last week. He had two pits or pit mixes that he adopted after their mother abandoned them on his property about a year ago. They are now stuck in his mother's (only immediate family member) home and she is elderly and has some physical disabilities and can not handle them. I live in a small house with no fences and have a small child that I'm not comfortable having pits around, so living with me is not an option. I'm trying to help her to the best of my ability to handle his final affairs.

They are approximately one year old females, sisters, not sure if spayed, are housebroken but one does chew on stuff. Never bitten anyone but will bark at my 3 year old. The white one is believed to be deaf. Other wise they are pretty sweet and loving, just don't trust them around small kids.

There's no shelter in this county, but I'm calling a rescue tomorrow. Any other ideas?

Bless you for trying to help. I a long ways away and have 6, all rescues including a female pit who is an incredible dog with 0 issues, or I would help out.

As frustrating as this may get, please don't give up on them. Your friend would be very grateful for your decency, kindness, and help. My hat is truly off to you.

We're fostering what I believe to be a little pit-mix puppy. She's 13 weeks and a bundle of fun. We are helping out Cane Rosso (the pizza place in DFW). They help with re-homing and fostering dogs all over the city. You might reach out to them and see if they can help - maybe find a family like ours that will house them temporarily and get the word out.

This place is worth a call just to see if they even have advice if not more willing advocates to help you with the rehome. It is designed for the more complicated rehoming and focuses solely on Pit breeds. They find homes for older dead dogs and have a really dedicated foster group and Vet sponsors that help with the adoptability though training and socialization.

If driving a few hours is worth it for these guys, definitely check it out.

Such a hard situation. Wish we could help, but we are full with 6 large dogs too. We are not in that area as far as being able to recommend specific rescues. However, a couple tips that might help… we love pitties, but most rescues advertise them as something else that they might be mixed with, even though it's obvious they have some in them. It's a mixed breed, not a pit. Also, pretty much any rescue in our area is happy to take dogs under their protection and contracts, and try to help find a new home as long as they have a foster that is able to care for them. Fosters and adopters for large breed adult dogs are typically harder to find. So if you can secure a good foster for them, that will help a lot. Most dogs sleep a bit of the day and just need a little exercise, outside time and attention. A small yard or even an apartment setting is fine, and always better than surrendering them to a shelter. There are people out there looking for beautiful pups like these, it just may take some time to find the right fit. If there is a large rescue in your area, that would be best. Belle's Buds outside of Houston or Charming Pet Rescue in Boerne, get a lot of eyes on their dogs and transport them to other states too. Good luck!

Difficult situation. The pits at the scrap yard love me. They try to jump on me and lick my face - sweetest dogs. But I get it. Good luck.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Thank you all for the kind words and helpful responses. I knew it was going to be a tough thing to find these two placement due to having pit in them and their age. I'm going to try the local rescue group and if that doesn't work, I'll reach out to the suggestions here.

We just adopted from there as well after losing our really beloved Staffy Mix rescue. The organization is awesome.
