This just crazy story out of Oregon.

Local coverage:
https://www.koin.com/news/oregon/petition-to-ban-hunting-in-oregon-gains-traction-for-november-ballot/

Here is the peace act:

https://www.yesonip28.org/

Quote:

Leftists are hoping to get Initiative Petition 28, dubbed the PEACE Act People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions on Oregon's November 2026 ballot. And they're getting close.
The proposal begins by noting that "Oregon state law already recognizes that animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, stress, and fear," then argues that "current exemptions permit unnecessary and inhumane harm to animals." Backers say those exemptions undermine the spirit of existing protections. The PEACE Act seeks to amend Chapter 167 of the Oregon Revised Statutes, which they contend "provides unnecessary exemptions to laws governing animal abuse, animal neglect, and animal sexual assault."

I think technically Ranching would be outlawed from it as well.

Absolute bull**** with hopefully no chance of passing, but voters in Portland and Eugene are just dumb enough that it could pass and cost the state millions in litigation fees before being declared unconstitutional (like what is happening with the measure 114).

They tried something similar a couple of years ago as well.

They have managed to drive license fees alone through the roof. My last year in OR my fishing license alone as almost $100 and I hear its even higher this year, when I got my TX license last fall the hunting/fishing combo was less then that.

So the act would be to reduce "pain, suffering and fear"?

As with many liberal initiatives the unintended consequences will result in more of the thing it tries to prevent. In general, game animals killed by hunters have far quicker deaths than the ones that die from natural causes. Or maybe Oregon will build nursing homes for elderly deer and elk.

It may not pass the first, second or even the 5th time.

But the same thing was said about smoking bans in public and in bars, etc. Until eventually they did pass. Here's the thing about the left - they are absolutely bat sht crazy but they are relentless when it comes to something like this. They will get it on the ballot over and over and over again and eventually they simply wear the other side down until the other side just doesn't fight much anymore, and the left wins their cause.

It absolutely sucks, but they are a damned cancer that eventually kills everything around them. Which is why whenever a new gun control measure or something like this pops up and on this board you get the "yeah, it will never pass, no need in worrying about it!" crap mentality that poster needs to be called out and reminded that the long game is how they win, and they are friggin masters at it unfortunately.

Of all the fitting examples, I'm not sure ensuring non-smokers don't have to suffer through second hand smoke is the best one you could have used.

Especially since 70%+ of the public supported the ban and second hand smoke is medically horrible for others that chooose not to smoke. And it was done at the municiple levels where the issue took place.

Now if you want to start talking about people living in cities trying to ban things that don't legally happen in cities (hunting), what and how rural counties should address the situation, that would probably be a fun conversation.

Since so many animals die due to automobile strikes, I suppose driving will be banned as well?

Liberalism is mental illness.

Is there a companion bill to reintroduce predators, specifically deer, to help control the population. Including the suburban deer population around Portland, Salem, etc? After all, mountain lions and wolves are sentient beings that do not deserve to suffer through hunger.

This has nothing to do with animal animal cruelty. If it was, they would just ban the 6.5 CM.

Considering they live on stolen land, they should cede the lands back to the wildlife and move their leftist asses out of the state altogether.

Reintroducing predators would be silly.
Since animals are sentient beings, according to Oregon law, a predator killing a deer or rabbit would have to be considered murder. All predators thus belong in prison!

Wait, that is too cruel.

Predators accused of killing prey should be arrested and be taken to court. Then the murderers should be let out on recognizance bonds until they kill again.
I believe that is how it works.

https://thatoregonlife.com/2026/02/vote-fails-on-oregons-new-gun-control-bill-meeting-paused-20-minutes-later-it-passes-totally-normal/

Quote:

During the committee session, Rep. Thy Trn, a Democrat from Portland, voted "no" on a key amendment. Legislative video shows Kropf audibly inhaling and then abruptly pausing the meeting before all members had finished voting.

So the meeting stopped.

According to a complaint later filed with the Legislative Equity Office by gun rights advocate Derek LeBlanc, Kropf and Trn stepped outside the room. The complaint alleges Trn was left visibly shaken and in tears after the interaction. It also claims Kropf threatened her and refused to accept her initial "no."
Kropf has denied wrongdoing and said he holds deep respect for Trn, declining to comment further because of the open complaint.

Of course.

A clock in the committee room shows roughly 20 minutes passed before the meeting resumed.
Then came the re-vote.

Trn appeared confused, asking, "Didn't we just vote on it already?"
Kropf replied that he had asked for a recall of the vote.

Again.

After several pauses and visible hesitation, Trn switched her vote to "yes." She later voted "yes" on the overall bill.

Cities, towns and their infrastructure displace and harm far more animals than anything else. Oregon should shut down all of its incorporated areas and return the land to nature. If people want to live there it should be in 100% natural structures.

They were petitioning for signatures on the medical campus my wife works at.

Pitch line was around ending the use of primates for medical R&D. No mention of anything else. Plenty of rubes just sign without reading a thing.

Reading it, it would end things like neutering dogs (cruelty), tail docking (cruelty), dairy farms (cruelty), artificial insemination (sexual assault). Even performing pest control for rats/mice would be illegal. Rodeos, illegal. Commercial fishing, done.

We have a major invasive issue of Emerald ash borer wiping out our Ash tree pops. It would outlaw the state from fighting them.

Would also end ODFW. They are 80%+ funded by hunting/fishing license, tags and permits.

Would have every rural Oregonian at the polls this November. Could backfire, honestly.
