OB and Texan favorite Robert Duvall has passed on.
Gus McCrae I would venture to guess in on everyone's top 5 Western Characters.
This one is tough.

I first watched Lonesome Dove on a 13 inch TV on VHS at a deer lease outside Carrizo in the early 90's over the span of 3-4 days in the evenings after the hunts. Missed it on TV.

All day in the stand I'd think about that show.... it really burned it my memory. Later I read the book, absolutely a must for anyone here.

Duvall is great in everything: Apocalypse Now, Open Range, The Godfather, The Great Santini, The Natural, Secondhand Lions.... truly an icon.

One of the best actors ever. So many great characters. Gus McCrae topped them all for sure.

He was good as a young actor, but got great in his older days.

I can't say that I have ever cared when a celebrity or movie star or the like has died. But this one hits different. Maybe because I like to think that Duvall wasn't acting in his movies - he was playing himself. Maybe because Augustus McCrae and Uncle Hub are the picture of old timers that lived a life of adventure. Dunno. But this speech and his deathbed scene in Lonesome Dove are just perfect.

And of course the bar fight speech

100%

I remember watching "Lonesome Dove" on TV as a kid and I loved it but it's only gotten better for me over the years. Especially after reading the books.

I missed "Secondhand Lions" when it came out in 2003 as I didn't have kids yet and was just too busy with other things. Then, coming across it at some point after I became a father and watching it with them. Great art and wisdom come in many forms and this is a must watch with some excellent advice for raising men.

Lonesome Dove simply the best western ever made. I bought this picture at the NFR in December and so glad I did. Rest in peace Robert Duvall.

I know it wasn't cinematic greatness and basically Top Gun 2 with race cars, but Harry Hogge was damn entertaining in Days of Thunder.

He was great in that movie as well. His iconic line of " I Love the Smell of Napalm in the morning-smells like-Victory" is one of my favorites. Also liked " The Great Santini" as well. Hell, any show he was in was great!!

Was about to say, how do we get this far without mentioning Harry.

AKA the Command Center guy...
