I understand keeping a straight line behind your rifle when shooting prone but I'm not sure about this kind of placement.

Maybe ok for 30lb small caliber rifles but I'm not doing this with any hunting rifle

Why not? Most of the folks I shoot with, myself included, do it that way.

I have the buttpad closer to centerline and am squared up in prone, but not in seated or kneeling positions. In also not using a tripod or bipod. I can see the validity when you have something totally supporting the foreend with no input from you.

Something to play around with at the next range trip. I think I'll need to stick with a more bladed stance using crossed trekking poles and\or a pack as support from kneeling or seated.

I can listen to an argument for the buttstock closer to center for prone shooting but not while I'm sitting in the deer stand or a table at the range. I am going to be feeling it after the 1st shot as opposed to after 10 shots.

Squaring up your body some more is something I already do but it is still seated in my shoulder pocket.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right as everyone is different. For me personally, shoulder vs centerline feels about the same. Recoil has never bothered me. The difference, for me, is centerline is way easier on my neck and not as much scope/dot movement allowing for faster target re-acquisition.

I do bench shoot my 22 like that, but even a heavy 22 on bags can bruise my collarbone. I doubt that I would ever do it with a centerfire.

You don't put the butt on your collar bone. Put it on your pec muscle just underneath. It makes a great pad.

Youtube algo strikes again. This popped up in my feed. Thompson/Center demonstrates the same thing.

I wonder what it would be like with a shotgun?

I think I've defaulted to shooting "sorta" like that, just because I never had a traditional rifle with a long enough length of pull.

I have noticed that a lot of PRS prone shooting folks are in a straight line but I never could feel comfortable like that- probably bc of the stock position. But I feel like putting the stock under the collarbone on the pec muscle would bring everything too low then youd have to crane your neck down to get into the optic- but I obv havent tried it. Might play with that tonight.

lol. What a weird statement. Recoil control is much more important on a lighter, higher recoiling rifle than a 30lb gamer gun.

If you don't need to spot your impacts at 80 yards shooting from your lazyboy in a blind then hold your gun however you want. But if you want to practice actual fundamentals, shoot further, and be able to call shots/make corrections on your own, I'd suggest trying the positioning that MDT demonstrates in the video. It's also the positioning and fundamentals that every instructor in the industry I've seen teaches when it comes to longer range bolt action shooting.

I guess there is some misunderstanding. You aren't putting the stock way over my your sternum or anything. You are just moving over from the traditional pocket by about an inch or so. This centers you up better and it keeps your rifle from moving around when you move you arm (and thus your shoulder as well).

As i said when I shoot prone with my long range rifle I am more straight line but I don't have the stock sitting 2" off the center of my chest but more just inside my shoulder pocket.

However I am very reluctant to do that closer to centerline placement with my high recoil rifles. Especially when standing sling supported or kneeling.

This position seems very specific to long range competition shooting with rifles that already have a lot of recoil reduction modifications. Or maybe I'm just old and set in my ways when it comes to hunting.

Obviously you've never met me. I never had much pecs, but after a rotator cuff tear, and two neck fusions, there's just ribs under my collarbone

Would it kill you to share your information without being so condescending??

I have met you and Dubi both. I never saw you with your shirt off though.
