I will be spot spraying johnson grass in a few pastures...

25 gallon sprayer with 2.5GPM pump. Application via a handheld wand.

Per Label: Hand-Held and High-Volume Application:
Hand-Held and High-Volume Application With hand-held and high-volume spray equipment, apply a spray solution consisting of 1 ounce of this product plus 1 quart of a nonionic surfactant (0.25 percent) per 100 gallons of spray solution.

Therefore I will be adding less than 1 ounce of Outrider + 25 gallons + a nonionic surfactant.

Seems like a very minute amount of product. Any suggestions or adjustment based on your experience with the product? Thank you

It's 1.3 Oz per acre so a little goes a long way.
Outrider works great. I'll be doing the same shortly.

I have been using Outrider with a surfactant to kill Johnson grass for a couple of seasons now. Doing the same as you with a 25 gal. tank spot spraying with a wand.
Last season I mixed it at that ratio. It worked well on plants 6" to 12" tall but did not get a good kill on taller JG.
This year I used 2oz. (doubled it) instead and it did a good kill even on really tall grass that had headed out…..but it did not hurt my Bermuda that I could tell.
I'll try to send a pic or two.
I also added surfactant again along with blue dye.

where do yall buy the outrider? attempt to cut the johnsongrass and spray the cut stalks or just spray the full grown flowering plant as-is and cut later once dead?

thank you all for the feedback.

to answer last question I have purchased from below:

If someone has a better deal I'd love to hear it.

Thank you

You don't want to cut it and then spray it.
If you cut it then let it start growing again to like 6-8" then spray it. Thats what was recommended to me at our Ag store and by B-1-83 on here.
I just sprayed some tall headed out JG and it killed it good.
I paid about $389.00 at our Ag store so that price is much better than what I paid.

Gunny,

Thanks for posting about the dose you are using for spot treatment. Like Fulshear, I'm amazed that such a tiny amount of product can be so effective on the invincible johnsongrass.

I've been spot spraying with glyphosate, and it takes a decent amount to get a good kill, with the side effect that I'm killing the stuff I want to keep, too.

I realize you're not in Texas, but should you get down here this summer and drive I-35 through Bell County it appears that TxDOT unloaded both barrels in its war against johnsongrass on the ROW's between the main lanes and the frontage roads, and also past that to the edge of the ROW.

I've wondered if they've been using OutRider to do it, because the johnsongrass is all brown, but everything else looks untouched. If they did use OutRider, they certainly spent some bucks because they've sprayed a bunch of it.

Thank you sir. I'd like to see it.

A couple years back TXDOT treated Johnsongrass in Milam County. I called to ask what they used and they told me Target (MSMA). It appeared to be really effective that time. Too bad it is not labeled for certain applications anymore (i.e. hay fields, lawns) because of the arsenic. Still okay for roadsides and ROW, though.

Is everyone after super clean horse quality (don't get me started on that) hay? My solution in pastures has generally been leave it alone, graze it, and it disappears on its own (sans disturbance).
Being in TexAgs jail changes a man……..no, not really

I don't have grazing animals since I have a wildlife exemption. And I don't have a tractor (yet) or any equipment to make any hay even if I knew how to sell it. I just have a newly repaired/reconstructed pond that now has an expanding 4-5' tall forest of Johnson grass surrounding it.

That has not worked for us here at all. It went wild the last two years with all the rain in our Bermuda and Fescue fields. We don't graze the fields …just hay production for the Bermuda and part of the fescue fields. I bush hog the fescue fields for hay but one field is combined for seeds so can't bush hog it.
All fields are fertilized.
Every neighbor rancher I have has the same issue.
We sell the Bermuda to all the horse breeders up here and you will get "black balled" by the horse folks if they find a smidgin of J Grass in it.
Every Equine vet puts the fear of God in them about the JGrass. If I want to sell it I have no choice, or I'll be selling it for the price of cheap cow hay.

What did horses eat before Bermuda grass and fescue?

I don't know. Maybe ask all our Aggie Equine vets?

I really don't know how the species ever survived to begin with.

Johnson Grass was an introduced species right?

Yep.
Quote:

It is named after an Alabama plantation owner, Colonel William Johnson, who sowed its seeds on river-bottom farm land circa 1840. The plant was already established in several US states a decade earlier, having been introduced as a prospective forage or accidentally as a seedlot contaminant.

Don't get me started about horse hay. There are custom balers where I grew up, and they always complained about making it. The square bales couldn't be too heavy, and you couldn't rake it because they wanted thin flakes in the bales, so it took longer to finish a field. Fortunately they would pay out the wazoo for it.

As a kid we'd go to Brookshire and load Johnson grass square bales for my dads and dads friend horses. The field was disked up and JG came on its own then they'd bale it. My first intro to fire ants
