Anyone a member? How is the commitment? I have always been interested in SAR and have some experience with the feds as well as a medical background.

Anyone have and experience interacting/collaborating with these groups?

Looked into it years ago when I first certed as a EMT. TTF is a specialized unit though with specialist roles, meaning they are looking for more advanced training and experience. Things like confined space rescue, structural collapse training, all sorts of rope training, multiple levels of water rescue, things like that. Generally people with several years of firefighting and paramedic experience that do the extra stuff. Basically you need the more advanced official trainings of the things you would think of for that type of work. Either NFPA or FEMA or both. NREMT-P for medic of course.

They do have animal vet stuff (double checked and the emergency animal vet team that deploys with TTF often is with the vet school at TAMU officially and not TTF itself) and support staff too though. Not sure what the recs are for those though off top of head.

ETA: As far as the commitment, I remember it being you have to live within 3 hours of CS and there were multiple teams that did month long on/off cycles where you could get called up. They worked with your employer if that happened.

My BIL has worked with them for ~ 20 years. Happy to connect if interested.

My understanding is these guys all come out of full time TCFP fFre Depts in and around their call up area.

I've met a few of them at TEEX as instructors when I was in a VFD. One of them was a Capt with Austin FD. The little interaction I had with him he was a heck of a man and I would have followed him though the gates of hell given the chance. He passed a free yard ago, if I recall from an aggressive cancer. I saw the post/announcement on social media and it hit me.

So to the OP... Since most of the municipal FDs also run EMS I think most of them are full time FF in their departments rescue squads, likely paramedics, and then get on with TTF1/2

TTF members come from all types of fields. FF/LEO usually are the best fit for a majority of the field spots. Just due to the training and requirements at their everyday job they are able to meet the requirements. Even from there though its a very in depth application and selection process. As mentioned they are looking for advanced sets of skills. You can go to their website for more information.

I was the communications manager for TEEX and deployed as PIO with Texas A&M Task Force One

Most are with fire departments full time. There are others who are from other walks of life. The information above is correct.

If anyone would like to donate, the Texas task Force foundation is a great way to do so. Here is an update from their deployment.

We are extremely grateful for all of the Texas Task Force members who have been a part of the catastrophic flooding in the Texas hill country.

TX-TF1 members were deployed ahead of the flash flooding in several locations, including Kerrville, and have been active making rescues since the first rains fell. Over 175 personnel are working this event which includes searching for the missing and performing many rescues in several locations where flash flooding is still occurring.

Their dedication to serving other Texans is exemplary

Deployed members include:

- Texas A&M Task Force 1(TX-TF1)- A Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) team with water capabilities- 53 personnel

-Texas Task Force 2 (TX-TF2)- A Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) team with water capabilities- 46 personnel

-TX-TF1-9 Swif****er/Flood Rescue Teams with inflatable rescue boats- 76 personnel

-TX-TF1- Helicopter Search and Rescue Technicians (HSART), rescue swimmers who will partner with Texas Military Department (TMD) and US Coast Guard (USCG) aircraft- 9-personnel

-11-Search Canines

-27-boats in use between all teams

My neighbor was in TTF2 for 18 years (including the Wimberly flood.) He was Dallas Fire Dept for 36 years. Retired from Dallas 6-7 years ago.

If I recall, TTF2 was initially a Dallas FD creation, then folded into the A&M system with TTF1 about 7-8 years ago since it makes more sense to operate them together

Which that was the link to my neighbor's involvement being Dallas FD at the time. He's also one of those types that must be doing something all the time. When he wasn't working his FD shift or training/working on TTF2, he was instructing or working in his yard. His yard is always immaculate.

I still remember the toll Wimberly took on him. Very hard work and stress over an extended days. They are pouring it all out to save people, putting themselves at risk, and they will see things that make it hard to be whole again. Pray for these guys too

I can tell you this. Although I am not part of TXTF1 anymore, just reading this thread and seeing the news stories have fired up some serious PTSD from my time in Wimberley.

And I wasn't really in the thick of it there. My job was simply public information and media wrangling..

My BIL is a fire captain and member of TXTF1. Dude is a certified badass.

Nothing else to share, just giving my BIL his props.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I guess with a little more research I don't exactly qualify without some significant training. Well maybe I will start working on some of them.

I used to be a student worker for teex and mowed/weedeated all around disaster city.,,,,pretty cool training facility. One summer they had us pouring removable concrete slabs they would slide into place and have guys using giant cutoff saws cut holes into the sides of buildings. If I recall correctly my boss said we tied 4-5 miles of rebar for those slab inserts that summer.

I punched through many of those concrete blocks doing a confined space rescue course. Nothing like using a jackhammer horizontally while laying down...

I came out of that tunnel covered in concrete dust. I looked like the Michelin Man.

The ICS and FEMA courses are easy to complete online.

Sounds like you're not a FF/EMT, and that's okay - these organizations have a huge logistical requirement that operates behind the scenes and might be a good fit for you.
