Rat/mouse Nest in Pool heater

Pool heater was not working so I opened up the cover and discovered the nest. My pending solution is to install some type of "fencing" to potentially keep the rats/mice out. Would the fencing pictured work to keep them out or should I go smaller?

That would probably keep rats out, which is likely what you are dealing with, but don't be surprised if they find a way in. You can also set a Tomcat snap trap under the housing for a few days and see if you kill a couple.

Is that wire mesh or plastic? If plastic, they'll chew through it.

Not a fan of the snap traps due to dogs but I do have four of the kind you see outside of commercial buildings.
