Good evening all.

We had a Frenchie that passed last October after 13 full years (was almost 14!) and we are starting to think about looking again.

The people we bought Lexi from had her on accident and are not breeders so we are a little in the dark.

Anyone have a recommendation for a breeder for either?

I would prefer and English as we had one of them before kids and she was great. Wife would probably prefer a Frenchie but loves the English as well.

And yes we know all about the health concerns. Our first dog died of a brain tumor before she was 3. Lexi had a few issues when she got older but was a great (and hilarious) dog.

Any advice is appreciated!

My advice is to find a local rescue group specializing in the breed you want. There is simply no sense in patronizing a puppy mill/"breeder". The right groups will have fine folks there that will get you set up with the right dog.

While I appreciate the sentiment I did check all the major rescue groups in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. I'm not interested in a dog older than about a year, and with you g kids I'm not sure I want to take a risk of a dog raised in another home. I do appreciate the thought and wish we could do a rescue dog as I know there's a lot of needy ones there. But that isn't for us at this time.

Ever thought about a Boston Terrier? They are awesome little dogs that are not far off from a Frenchie. Very strong willed and brave as the day is long.

Only advice I can share is carefully vet any breeder you consider. Unfortunately, with the increase in popularity of French bulldogs, many breeders choose color and a certain "look" over health and wellbeing. Even some of the breeders that do genetic testing will continue breeding dogs they shouldn't.

Yeah I have been reading about the new "merle" colors and how harmful it has been to both breeds. Things have certainly changed since we got our last dog almost 15 years ago.

We have a friend with a Boston. He's incredibly annoying . Not that out frenchy wasn't also completely stubborn and annoying but at least she was cute while she pissed us off

We have an opportunity for a lab as well. That would certainly be a change in energy levels for us. Part of me has always wanted one...

Good luck. Brittmoore Animal Hospital in Houston sees a ton of those bulldogs (both) and bully's, specializes in breeding. They may have a contact list or can check out their bulletin board in clinic. Even the "good" breeders are honestly not that great in that breed, so highly likely you'll end up with a lemon. Definitely get pet insurance from the start. I'd recommend looking through the breed club listings through AKC to start, maybe find some near you.

Have you considered adoption?

Don't count out a rescue yet. We foster cockers and we have them for at least a month before they are put out to adopt. If the rescue is reputable, they will know the personality of the dog and we also get very young ones. Just takes some time as they cycle through. We've had a couple that wouldn't do well with a second dog or was going to be a challenge and needed a good strong lead in the family so the fosters should know that before you bring the dog in for a visit.

We have an English from R3 Ranch Bullies. He's been pretty great and very healthy ( for a bulldog).

Don't know about English but if you get a Frenchy buy medical insurance for it.
